This thread is a little self-serving. I’m going to look at an 84 SN2001 tomorrow that is in need of some TLC. This boat is in similar condition to the one Astro209 bought. Just like his situation the price is ideal for a project boat. Figured I would compile all the pics that were easy to find on this site with the 80’s Ski Nautique 2001 to serve as a resources for all the owners or prospective buyers. If you guys have more pics please post them I was unable to find some pics I remember seeing on here. If I mixed up any boats and owners I’m sorry in advance.

Erik, I was searching these forums to get a lot of info. Decided to consolidate a lot of the information into one thread. I'll post picks late tomorrow with the project and try to make a decision about buying it by sunday.

Cool, it's good to see my boat in there. If you need any advice on restoring your boat, let me know. Me and my buddy built a tower for the boat and are in the process of putting it on right now. I'll post some pics when I can. It might be a week or so, though.

I don't care what anyone says, for being 20 years old, 2001's are sweet looking boats(if they are taken care of).

I definitely agree that they're some nice looking boats. My heart leaps any time I get in mine from the dock and I think, "Wow! Is that my boat?" Plus she's so responsive!
I also really like the dashes in the 88-89s. They look more modern and better than those in most other companies.

This is my favorite thread ever! Mine was first! Do I win anything? I recently sold my 2001, but it will truely be misses. What a great boat to drive and ride behind. I still think Correct Craft should bring back a modern version to sell for like 20k. I love the way 2001's look in the water.

Update w/o pics... Pictures coming soon (forgot digi but had a disposable in the truck)
Friday I went to check out the project boat.
Gelcoat- needs some ding repair but no damage to the fiberglass. Some serious elbow grease to bring back the shine but who knows maybe I will beat Erik to the gelcoat job?
Stringers- cranked on the engine mounts and they all grabbed. The stringers had been encapsulated in epoxy so I was not able to get a better look. There was some exposed wood that did not have sgns of rot.
Floor- soft and needs to be replaced.
Engine- no starter or water pump. Oil is dark and no signs of a cracked block. Ran before starter and pump were removed.
Transmission- not working but already removed so that makes the repair easier.
Trailer- horrible shape but with some grease I could nurse it to my backyard.
Upholstery- faded, cracking, in need of replacement
Kind of a big proect but I think it would be fun to take on. At first it looked a little overwhelming but the more I think about it I could essentially have a solid boat after full restore for around 5k. That's a lot of work by myself but through the construction/canvas awning comapny I work for I have access to everything I need, including sewing machines, welders, and other things that will be handy.

Give me some pros/cons...
I'm still in college and if I'm ambitious I might be in school for a while. Currently making payments on a 99 Tige that I can sell and break even on. I figure the payments over the next 2 years will exceed what I plan on spending on this boat.
Is this a wise move or am I dreaming?

Nor-cal, the floors in those old Nautiques aren't wood like you think. What CC did was they shot the foam then laid fiberglass over the foam. There is no wooden floor. There are just a few pieces of wood in places to support the seats and to have something to bolt the seats to. I know because I replaced the stringers in my '83 (I went back with a wood floor, though).

fuel, how hard was replacing the floors?
btw- how did you refinish the exterior? Paint or Gelcoat?
Your boat looks very clean...

Thanks, I appreciate it. Replacing the floor was not a big deal. The worst part was up under the bow, but still not bad. Replacing the stringers is a bitch, tho. The tearout sucks and because the stringers were rotten, we didn't have a pattern to use for our stringers and had to go strictly by the measrurements we made before. We spent a lot of time shaping the boards so they fit very close to the floor. We went back with four stringers instead of two. They originally had two stringers and then they had what I call "mini stringers" which were 1x4s fiberglassed on each side of the stringers. These are mainly used to help support the floor.
If you don't have to replace the stringers, then good. If you want to replace the floor, don't worry that's not too much of a hassle. There will probably be some water standing in the foam (there was in ours and is not uncommon from what I gather). It was mainly under the driver's seat where they failed to put enough foam in originally. The foam is AB foam (meaning it is two parts, an A and a B). You can get some from a marina or boat dealer (read $$$) or from a taxidermist (much much cheaper, but still not cheap). I would go back with a wood floor.
We used XL (same stuff that was used by Tige and is still used by Sanger) for the floors and the stringers. I actually went to the Tige plant to get it. It ain't cheap, but it's the best. Don't believe the stuff that the haters say. That stuff is awesome. It even cuts different than regular wood. I left some 4x8 sheets in the weather for over a year and no warpage. I still have some left that is a few years old that has not warped at all. This stuff is bad ass.
Anyway, cut the XL sheets to shape and lay them over your foam. Then just fiberglass over them. We actually painted the undersides of ours first, then fiberglassed over them. Then after fiberglassing them we gelcoated them. (You can actually by the gelcoat in gallons and brush it on). We mainly used fiberglass mat, but cloth works really well for flat surfaces. Go to some business that deals with fiberglass and get it. It will be chjaeper. We went to a place that builds fiberglass deer blinds. They sold the mat, resin, cataylst, the rollers for cost and even threw in a buicket of gelcoat that they weren't using any more. The old man that worked there used to work on boats and explained everything to us. Super nice people and more than happy to help.
If you want to use XL, I would suggest getting it through Sanger. I don't know anything about the company, but I bet they would be happy to take you on a tour and answer your questions.
Also, we painted the exterior of the boat with Dupont Imron. Very hard paint once it cures. It was a WHOLE lot cheaper than gelcoat (I can't remember but it was about $200-$300 for a gallon plus the hardener). We painted it ourselves. Being from Cali, it may be harder for you to do that kind of stuff. I know they have a lot more restrictions than we do. The best person to ask questions on painting a boat is masterpainter over on Wakeworld. Super, super nice guy and more than willing to answer any questions.
We have a few scratches that have gone through on our painting, but they were from some hard hits. No biggie, we can touch it up.
Hope I helped. Feel free to ask many any questions. It may take a while for me to respond though becuase I type slow!
