I want to buy a digital camera, but I need some input on what to look for in a camera. I use an old Pentax ME Super now.

I'm looking for something in the 3 mega pixel range( for price ). Do they take good action shots? Can you pan shoot with them? Do they have variable shutter speeds? Can you rapid fire them?

Basically, how much can you do with a digital vs my old 35mm? Digital SLR's are out of the question because of the price.

I'd like to hear some good brands and models to look into.
Thanks

With a 3 megapixel camera you are basically looking at a point and shoot, which does not give you a whole lot of options compared to your 35mm camera. You will be able to take some good action shots, but not on the fly, you will really need to time it out so that you get the rider in the air, and it will be nearly impossible to take sequence shots (rapid fire them as you say) as that kind of camera will be way to slow.

Good brands to look at are the Nikon Coolpix series, and the Canon series. Both series are pretty equal, but some other people may have more experience with them and will be able to tell you the true difference in picture quality.

Hope this helps.

i got a kodak dx6340. happy with it so far havent got any wakeboard photos yet but got some skating and on the trampoline. its 3.1 mp 4x optical zoom, it has a burst mode where it can take up to four shots in a row. its got preset modes with different shutter settings for action portrait and other modes as well as one you can mess around with the settings a little. pretty fast reaction time for action shots. the trick is to hold the button down halfway so the auto focus sets in. ill attach some action shots they are about one fourth of the original size.

ya the burst mode works great. at least one out of the four will turn out good. when we got the camera about six months ago it was 300 and it came with a dock that hooks up to the computer. the price has probably come down some since we bought it and also there is a cheaper version that has a lower quality lens and other options.

The Headless Chicken, Thanks for the info. I bought a Kodak dx6330 last night on ebay. Got it for 120$ 3x optical zoom, burst mode, movie w/sound, and a bunch of other stuff. If nothing else, it will be a good camera to learn with. Looking forward to seeing how it stacks up next to my 35mm.
