I think you can get an acid or stain of some sort that reacts with Al and can get it black (metalic) or powder coat em.

That rack won't work on a Monster.

Get 'em Line X'd. Then paint what you didn't want Line X'd. Actually, reverse the steps.

BigDeal, you're right. my bad.
The best option might be to pick the racks that look and fit the best, then have them powder coated whatever color you like..... in this case, black.

Hey Wakeside1, that's a really good looking rack! Can you remove it without disassembling the clamp? I'd need to remove my racks when I store my boat.
gmarkhum1, oops I just noticed something else about the rack Wakeside1 linked to. That thing has got one of those "chew the coating completely off your tower" clamps on it. Ouch! I don't think I could do that to my tower.

That's the worse part about alot of WB racks. Fortunately, there are styles which don't do that.
gmarkham1, I'll get the information you requested very soon. Thanks.

gmarkham1, have you considered just buying the '04 Mako's and having them powder coated? They will look great on the Monster Tower and won't chew up the coating. $459 for the pair plus powder coating is not bad for a nice rack!

Holy sh*t there D O, Monster sells a knockoff of the Mako racks on their site everyday for $195 a pair, and shipping is included!
I was gonna suggest the same thing though. Buy a pair of the Monster racks, pull off the rubber finger inserts, and send them off for power coating. Since they're aluminum you could also anadize (sp?) them black. Would be a little more costly, but it would also be more durable.

I wouldn't call them knockoffs, but they def. are similar. For the $60 (shipping is included in the $459) difference, I personally would go with the "real" deal. The '04 Mako's have been redesigned and are better than ever. However, he has a Monster Tower... might be wise to get the MT racks and have them coated any color he likes. MT makes some solid gear as well.

Both Monster Tower and Mako agree that they are now different. Can we move on?

| I would just buy whatever you like, and then go buy or rent from a local hardware store a powder coating gun (or sprayer or whatever) and just do it that way, esp. if you cannot find what you're looking for in black...just follow the instructions on the can & gun, & someone @ a hardware store could probably help you out on application aswell...

Oops, sorry there D O. I just did a little surfing and now realize that the Mako rack is indeed different than the one Monster sells.
I am curious though, does anybody know how Mako's new quick release (i.e. non-bicycle seat clamp) works? I couldn't tell on Wakeside's website just what type of quick release it is or how it functioned, and Mako doesn't have the 'new' design racks up on their site yet? Any ideas?

We just asked Brian at Mako to provide us close up images of the quick release in both the closed and open position along with a description of the new clamping system. We will add that to our website when we get it.
Brian told us that the quick-release is greatly enhanced but I have not actually seen the 2004 model yet, it's very early in the season.
I think we should have something early this week.

I just snapped a pic of the quick release system on the '04 racks, to give you guys an idea.
All you do is turn the black lever clockwise to thread the rack onto the mount.

That looks like a big improvement. With a quick-release you always need to think about safety and rattle-free rock-solid attachment.
NAW what do you think?

I think this design addresses both of those key aspects. These are rock solid and rattle free. Brian should be give you a full mfgr's description for your site soon.
Here's a few more, secured on the mount for vertical or horizontal tower tube. Once again, sorry about the quality.

Thanks for the pics NAW. Helps to explain a lot about the 04 Mako's new QR.
They look solid. I'll be interested here some reports after a full season of use!
