I'm going to New York with my friend for new years, and I was seeing if anyone who has been there (during new years or not) could give me some ideas for things to do while there (restaurants, clubs, ect.). Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose I could tell you all of the cool things to do there, but I won't. This is why:

You are in this awesome restaurant in New York. Your friends ask how you heard of it. You could tell them that this guy named Chales on a non-wakeboarding forum informed you about it. But no. You'll tell them that your boyfriend told you about it. All of you're friends will be jealous because they don't have boyfriends, you'll go to hell for lying, and I won't get the proper recognition which I deserve.

Happy Holidays! Twisted Evil

Clubs: Limelight
Scores

Food: Yama (sushi) on Houston (pronounced Howston, remember it)
Pelligrinos (Italian) on Mulberry I believe in Little Italy

Don't go shopping on Canal, it's all fake.

new york is one of my favorite places to be in the entire world. it’s a city for everyone and anything, with it’s own heart beat – fast, heart beat. it’s one of those things that you’ll either love or hate; if you love it, you will always love it and always long to go back and visit… or even move there, if you dare!

do you only want places to hit up on new year’s night? … or do you want some input on day events – like cafes, shopping, museums, off-broadway productions, parks, etc.- too??? lemme know… i would be more than happy to help out.

some general advice:
no one there really calls it new york city; it’s simply referred to as “the city” – i.e. i’m going into the city tomorrow - unless you are specifically asked what city you are going to (say by a cabbie at the airport); in that case, you tell him to take you to manhattan, or the island.

getting around…
i’m assuming that you will not be staying in manhattan proper, right? so more than likely you’ll either be in one of the surrounding boroughs or new jersey. DO NOT drive into the city. new yorkers drive like kamikazes; it’s just not worth it. and although, for the most part, the city streets are set up like a grid, the “tourist” streets merge, un-merge, & loop to an extent that it’s easy to get lost – for example 6th, 7th, 8th, and broadway. the subway will get you to where you want to go in fact, the subway is so efficient, i have never used the bus system – so i can’t really say anything about it. taxi’s are cheap, relatively speaking, since the island is only 14 miles long. if you’re tired of walking through rockefeller center and wanna head up to the park (central park = “the park”) or the met (the metropolitan museum of art = “the met”), a taxi will cost you about $3. in this case, a taxi can be cheaper than the subway or the bus.

being safe…
it’s a city; just use your city savvy when walking/getting around. the city is divided into lower, midtown, and upper manhattan – and of course each division has an east and west. the financial district & union park is pretty safe – although i haven’t been there since before 9/11. while the nyu territory, soho, and the village have their characters, for the most part they are safe (and a great source of entertainment!). try to stay off of the cross streets; do most of your walking on the parallel ones – Madison ave., 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, broadway. the upper side is where the rich people live and for the most part is safe until you approach harlem. be careful if you visit columbia; I hear that campus is ok, but that the outer-skirts are starting to go down – again, prolly ‘cause you’re hitting harlem, at that point.

any way, let me know if you want specific info about new year's night or places to go in general...

take care!

I went to NYC for New Years one year. I froze my ass off. Record lows, and the buildings made it like a big wind tunnel. I want to go back sometime, but it won't be in the winter if I can help it. I hear spring is the best time because its warmer, but the garbage hasn't started stinking yet.

also, I bought tickets for a big New Years Eve party at $100 a shot for me and my gf at the time. Ended up having to waiting outside in line in the above mentioned cold ass weather for hours with the people that didn't have advanced tickets. Finally got in, and stood in the coat check line for an hour. Shortly thereafter, gf sprained her ankle. Stood in the coat check line for another our. Walked back through the cold ass weather back to the hotel (with her on my back).

If you are staying in NJ the bus is the way to go. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get there depending on where you are going. The subway and the bus are really cheap, and get a Metro pass if you can to save some money. If you need to get across the city grab a taxi, as Frankie said they are pretty cheap.

I drove to a parking garage in NYC and left it there. Taxi'd everywhere after that.

churchy,

Thats usually what I do but I live in the Mid-Atlantic region. I actually like driving in the city. You can drive like an a$$hole(because everybody else does), Its kind of fun in a way. I usually take a full size pick up Very Happy But it costs 8 more bucks a day to park a full size. Sad

If I was flying in, I would probably just public transport it to where I was staying, but I pack light so no biggie. Cabs Are the way to go in the city. Its less hassle of trying to catch a bus. Just flag one down, like stated above they are pretty cheap.

Enjoy yourself, that city is a blast.
