| What, in your opinion, is the best breed of dog to chill on the boat?

| My labradors have been great fun in the water and on the beach, one would even ride on the kneeboard and sailboard with me, but they weren't great on the boat. One fell off the front of the boat and got hit by the prop, fortunately he got away with just a nasty cut on his butt that healed alright. Another had a nasty habit of jumping out to swim to you when you were down in the water.

I have the same problems with my lab. If he catches up to you in the water he tries to climb up on you, like you're an island - you can get scratched up pretty good. I've got to keep him tied up in the boat. He also won't shut up when I'm riding. He barks his ass off whenever I get in the water - only me though - it's funny at first, but gets annoying after a few hours!
Don't get me wrong though - he's an awesome dog, and an amazing swimmer.

Just wondering - you posted in "Boats and Accessories". Is a dog considered an accessory?

my english setter goes crazy when she gets to ride in our boat. SHe is pretty calm once she is in it though.
She loves swimming after the ducks and geese.
We keep her on an old ski rope by the water sometimes(usually an electric fence(on land)) and she can swim after the birds. It is funny b/c she thinks she is getting closer to them but has maxxed out how far she can go so she is just swimming in place getting some exercise. hehehhe
she loves seeing birds and ducks fly around the water while i ride...
here are some pics

The best boat dogs hate water. You don't have to worry about them jumping in. Both my dogs hate water they just find a nice spot and chill.

My lab is an AWESOME boat dog, but my wife has a gift for training animals (she works with horses), and she really taught him right. He pretty much just sits there and behaves, but after a set, if you call him, he will jump into the water and if you grap onto his harness, he will give you a tow back to the boat. It really is pretty funny! My wife says that he needed a "job" in order to behave on the boat, and she taught him that his "job" is recovery tow dog.

I would sooner just not have a boat than ban my dog from it. Just me, though. Our lab comes EVERYWHERE with us. I don't think he knows that he is a dog.

Do you guys do anything to help prevent your dog's claws from tearing up the vinyl?

| my lab stays on the swim platform the entire day. he has only fallen off once in over two years. i dont know how he does it, but he just never falls off. whenever a rider is done with his session, i send my dog to go get the handle for us. i also tell him to go to shore every now and then to go to the bathroom. besides that though, he stays on the swim platform all day long. no hair in the boat!!!

| have you ever seen a dog on a truck toolbox? its amazing how they can stay on there. i can see how they could stay on a swim platform. as for getting high i usually sit on the swim platforn when im watching other people ride and i never smell the fumes. if your going slow the piped are under water and if you're going fast the fumes are behind the boat so you dont smell them.

Labs are definitely the best dog as far as anything having to do with the water, IMO

labs are great boat dogs, the only problem I have with mine is him jumping out of the boat when we stop to pick up a fallen rider, he's learning though, I just tie him to the front seat, he sleeps on the fat sacks.....also make frequent shore stops, dogs won't pee in the water while swimming, mine took a 1 1/2 minute piss in the boat last year, poor thing he hadn't been in so long, he couldn't hold it.....

actually, let me add to that my earlier post. YES, my dog did get high and pass out one time. i didnt know what happened at first but then it hit me later that night. we had been riding all day and we stopped for about 10 minutes and the boat was running. he got high off the fumes and he fainted. it didnt bother him though cause the next weekend he was back at it. i just know now that if we are ever just sitting there or changing riders or something, i need to turn the engine off.
and one time i guess i hadnt let him go to the bathroom in a while and he was standing on the platform and just started peeing right there. i felt bad but he finished his business. we got it on video and we laughed our asses off.[/img]

Riverfreak- Is that an Insane Clown Posse guy under your name? I hope not. Those guys are such morons. They played a show at a club I used to work at, and totally ruined the floor, because they thought it was cool to pour like 500 2-liter bottles of root beer all over the crowd. I failed to see the entertainment value. You should have seen all of the white trash that showed up for that show too! And when they were all finished with their "show", the lead guy (the fat one) stunk up the employee bathroom like you wouldn't believe!
The following week Digital Underground played our club. THAT was cool. I burned with Shock G in the greenroom. That guy is one skinny MF! I got to try on his Humpty nose!

my lab is awesome on the boat, he even loves to jump on the jet ski and sit infront of me, he just licks the wind when we are cruzing at 50mph. i would never leave him on the dock, he is considered my 3rd spotter when only me and my buddy are boarding
