|
|
With long lead times this time of year to get a service done, and being a terminally anal retentive perfectionist I did my first oil change on our 22V Saturday. The bottom of the oil pan has a hose that I was able to run out of the drain in the transom. It took hours to drain the oil out as it was coming out almost dripping. This is far from my first oil change but the first time there was a hose from the oil pan. Is this normal or am I missing something? The hose is probably 1/2" or larger OD with about a 1/4" ID.
I also learned working on inboards is a lot more knuckle busting then outboards - which I've had on every boat before this one.

| There is a breather hose that you need to pull off. follow the hose from the flame arrestor and you will find it.

It also helps to warm up the oil by running the engine for a bit.

I have the same problem with my Tige. I think the rubber extension line is 3/8' ID. It takes around 45mins to an hour to drain.
Pardon my ignorance, but where's the flame arrestor?

i drain my oil overnight and the next time the boat is used just change the filter and add some oil and she is ready to go. I also suggest using synthetic oil
- you won't have to change as much. <90 hours

next time take the boat out and run it hard for 10-15 minutes, loosens up all the sludge and will drain in about 1-2 minutes. You can also just run it on the hose for 15-20 minutes to bring it up to temperature, don't open the spigot for the flush adaptor fully it'll warm up quicker.
Fellas, oil is thick, especially when it is 1) old, and 2) cold. You can't try to drain the oil with a cold motor, it just won't work. Sure, you can try to leave it overnight, and it eventually will stop draining, but all your engine innards will still be coated with a molasses like "old oil" sludge, and it will take forever with the little drain hose. Like i said before, get the engine hot, then open the drain hose, and pull the vent hose, 5 minutes tops before you've gotten every bit of oil out and can fill it back up fully with new oil.

I used a hand pump and attached it to the hose and sucked it out in 5 mins.

The tube coming off your oil pan is mean to attach to a pump, it threads on for a good Seal. Run your boat to operating remp and use a hand pump. make sure you don't cheap out on the pump, I did on my first one and thru it out. It didn't work worth crap. Also it helps to prime the pump by pouring some oil into the "Out" tube.
This pump is also handy for pumping out any water etc from your boat as well, just get a longer hose attachment.

its been said already but warm it up, flows easier and doesn't let all the crap in it settle to the bottom that won't drain.
oil changes shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, half hour with beverage breaks.

Here's a idea that will help greatly to reduce drain time as well as clean out some of the sludge and contaminants from inside the engine.
Add a quart of either Rislone® or a can of Marvel Myster Oil. Run it for 15 to 20 minutes - up to normal operating temperature. Then start the draining process. Be sure to change the filter as well. The Rislone / Marvel is much thinner and will aid in decreasing the viscosity as well as clean off all the crud. It will completely drained in less than 5 minutes.

| Did taking the fill cap off help out any? You may have had an air lock that was 'holding" the oil in, this shouldn't happen but... stranger things have happened.

Taking the filler cap off did not make a noticable difference. I even tried to pressurize the engine with an air hose and that did not help either???

| You have to remove the hose from the flame arrestor and make sure the oil is warmed up real well. Just be careful of the filter because it will be full and hot.

i would bet it would come out way faster if you could line up the hole w the end of hose. maybe try spinning it?wonder why it goes from 2 1/8 holes to a 1/2 hose?

| 882001, thats different than mine, mine just has a screw at the end of the hose that comes out, so the oil comes straight out of the end of the hose with no restriction

I have a hand vacuume pump that I bought from overtons. You just slip the correct adapter over the hose that comes off the pan and pump it about 5 times and come back about 5-10 minutes later and all the oi; is in the vacuum resevoir.
it works great and was only 50 bucks. I think Overtons calls it a oil extractor

Standard procedure for me is:
1. Run the engine until it's hot
2. Pump out the oil, (I've got a pump just like you deepcove)
3. Trip over the container, get oil all over, including myself, jump up and down going "Ouch! that's hot oil".
4. Remove filter, remember, too late, that there is like a quart of oil in the filter, much of which is now sloping around in the bilge!
5. Fill up with new oil.
I don't enjoy oil changes very much!

KristianB, I'd swear you were watching me change my oil. The only difference is I use an electric pump, which the first time I used it popped off the output hose and pumped oil all over the place. Luckily everything was covered with plastic, since I know my luck.

Go to Overtons.com and do a search for a "Jabsco Self-Priming Engine Oil Change System." This is an awesome product (you can make one yourself even cheaper if you're at all mechanically inclined) I don't use the dipstick tube though, (you really want to pull the oil from the lower pan!)
I modifed the ends of both hoses (the one from the bottom of the oil pan and the one from the pump) with quick release connectors and a ball valve. Oil changes take a total of 5 minutes after she's warm. Let me know if you need more details.

| warm up the engine (just a little) and if you have an empty gallon oil jug cut a hole in the top for the drain line, stick it in, seal it with duct tape, then put a vaccum in the original opening and let the machine do all the work. once it fills up be sure to turn it off and change jugs before you ruin your vaccum. a nice ridged jug helps along with a vaccum that is weak (it doesn't take much)
