Looking for a board that would meet the needs of my entire family. Last year (our first year at the sport) everyone used my Prodigy 140 which is probably too big for them. Wife(?)/son (12)/daughter(10) all beginners, just over 5 ft tall and weigh 100-130lbs. Was thinking that something w/ a continuous rocker around 130-135 length. Any suggestions based on experience? How about bindings that are comfortable and user friendly for the beginner? JG

I am a dealer and get this question all the time. I have also sold a lot of boards to families like yours. Here is what I have found:

You need two boards. I tried to get my daugher up on my board and she struggeled for several weeks. Same with my wife. Once I got a smaller board in stock, they were up on the first or second attempt and progressed rapidly in skill and confidence.

As for boards, I have some older stock that will work well for you and save a chunk of change. E-mail me at rider@boarditup.com for details. I need to know the various weights of the riders.

I don't comprehend as to why I need two boards. I already have one, a CWB Prodigy 140. The rest of the family who has been using mine for the better part of last summer is actually progressing along but my board is probably hindering their development. I'm just looking for a decent beginner-intermediate board that can suit all of them. They are all fairly comparable in size and skill right now.

Sorry - misunderstood.

You second board needs to be smaller - a 130-135 or so.

Same thing applies. Too much board makes it hard to progress.

My suggestion Double Up Soul 135. Great learning board. Will teach proper edging and is good for moving up to a more advanced board in a few years.

I think the size that you need if you bought a belmont would be a 131 cm board

I would think you could get away with a smaller board than 135. If you got like a 132 it would be a lot better for your kids and still probably fit your wife. 135 seems pretty big for a 12 year old.

The shape of the board has a lot to do with it. If the board is rounded on the ends, it has less surface area than a square end board. You can go a bit longer. Round end boards are also more forgiving - that allows for easier rides and greater confidence. Finally, look for a board that is relatively featureless on the bottom. The highly contoured boards are great, but can cause problems for those learning. Of course, they can adapt. However, it is a lot easier to train a new driver on a Tarus than a Formula 1 race car.

Just my 2 cents.
