After I'm finished with school, I'm thinking about moving to either Tennessee or N. Carolina. For those who live in either state, I'd like to get some information about each.
Some things I'd like to know:
- What part of the state are you from?
- How are the school systems? (I'm going to be a hs science teacher)
- How are the taxes, cost of living, etc.?
- What about lakes, rivers, climate, riding season?
- Any other info you can give about your state...
Thanks _________________ A successful person is a dreamer who someone believed in |

drifter136 - I live in Kingsport, TN and lived in Raleigh, NC previously, so I can give you some scenarios. In this area we have quite a few lakes within an hours drive, some only 15 - 30 minutes away. In NC you have to pay LOTS of taxes as they have state income tax which is way more than the higher sales tax we have. The schools are all vary as to where you live no matter what part of the country you are from. Here we have some great schools and some not so good as they had in Raleigh. Both places have lots of lakes and would say the wakeboard scene is probably a little longer in Mid NC verses here in NE Tenn. simply because of our elevation. We are only an hour from snow skiing/snowboarding as there a several slopes in Banner Elk/Boone, NC. The cost of living here depends on if you live in city or county which varies in tax rates. Cheaper to live in county as you get more house/land. I was raised in West Tenn. so I know a bit about it also and think that NE Tenn. is the best area to raise kids and has the most amenities. I am a 48 yr old Pres. of a company & father of a 21 yr old and a 13 yr old. I also lived in Mrytle Beach, SC and have traveled all over these states so I got a pretty good picture. What's your occupation going to be as that will make a difference as to your opportunities for job value and income. Good Luck and e mail me if I can be of help! _________________ "Beam me up Scotty, there's no intelligent life down here!" |

Ok I live in chattanooga, TN
Great lake and river very close by... (In city limits) with a good riding scene.... Sliders and kickers (you have to know the right people to find out where they are)
There are a ton of privite schools and magnate schools that focous on science so you probly won't have a hard time finding a job....
Cost of living wise... Umm.... Costs more than most of TN ... Houses cost more and stuff.... Like a 3,000 sq foot "luxery" home on the lake is a little over 1 million and "luxery" homes in nicer "hoods" that are around 3000 sq ft go for about half mil ( counsil fire, legends ) but you can aslo get a 3 bedroom 2 bath new home in some less nice more affordale n hoods for around $180,000
Half acer lots in subdivisions range from $20,000 thru $35,000
Half acer lots in golf course subdivisions range from $40,000 thru $120,000 (on the golf course)
Cheack out www.realastatehomelink.com
Sales tax is fricikn like 9 cents per doller and other taxes depend if you live in the city or county.... |

| I live in Memphis. There are some lakes located within a few hours. The memphis city schools suck. The shelby county schools are much better than the city schools. There are some high class private schools around the suburbs. The cost of living ranges from ghetto to multi million dollar houses and everything in between. The other posts about taxes are basically the same here. |

brad ruleman, The climate seems about perfect for what I like...not too hot, not too cold. The land is awesome (at least around the foothills of the App Mts. Haven't really been to western TN. Although Gatlingberg is too touristy for my liking, that area is beautiful (a group of us got a cabin for a week for our senior trip). I would be looking into a rural region. Don't like large cities.
I still don't graduate for another two years...I'm just trying to get as much info in case I do make the choice to move down there. _________________ A successful person is a dreamer who someone believed in |
