Ok, Realll college is getting closer, and i need some help on picking classes/major. I want to be an editor (write, edit, produce) all that good stuff. I was thinking about going into journalism-broadcast, do you guys think that would get me a job as an editor? _________________ if it takes POOP to make bliss then i feel pretty blissfully -modest mouse

I double majored in Broadcasting journalism and English/Creative Writing. I worked as a photojournalist, a legal resource editor, and now I'm a technical instructor/writer.
What type of writing/editing/producing do you want to do? I wish I had different majors. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

It's too early for you to try & pigeonhole yourself now. Most undergrads don't end up majoring in what they initially thought they would. Take a variety of classes & find out what you have an aptitude & interest in.
Something that you may wanna consider (but most undergrads don't) is what kinda career potential there is for someone with a major that you're pursuing. Is it something you'd wanna do for your whole life? Is there demand for it?
I have a buddy who majored in History. He's been working odd jobs for the past 3 years & can barely make ends meet & he's ALWAYS complaining about it. He's finally getting his teaching credential 'cuz there's basically not much he can do with that major. My other buddy is an electrical engineer & got hired before he even graduated by National Semiconductor. He has a condo in the Silicon Valley & 3 cars, 1 of which is a Viper. Just something for you to consider. |

Go to a JC , get an AA in Nursing; take your exam to become an RN.
Then look through all your job offers, especially the ones who will pay for an advanced degree.
Since there is a nursing shortage across the country, trust me you'll make a lot of money and can make your hours work to your advantage.
It's not all about cleaning bedpans. Do the research and you'll be surprised at what you find. There are many areas in healthcare you can work in.
No I'm not an RN and never have been. |

Dragonlady8, nurses only have AA's?
Damn I should have done that... Does nursing pay better than being a paramedic fireman? _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

Yes NorCal, you only need an AA to become an RN. BUT in order for you to advance in life in that profession you need to pursue a BS Degree.
The way things are going now, anyone who knows how to play their cards right can make some serious money. Especially after 2yrs experience in the ICU/CCU/ER. |

A friends wife graduated from nursing school last year and when she came out to visit hospitals in San Diego she had job offers from every place she interviewed at. I think she started off at $25-27/hr with benefits and OT pay is quite nice. _________________ This time, like all times, is a very good one if we but know what to do with it. - Ralph Waldo Emerson |

I agree with whoever said "don't pigeonhole yourself yet"....you really dont need to know your major till the end of your sophomore year...just take whatever sounds interesting 1st semester and dont stress...college is a blast _________________ got premier? |

Jester, robby j, I would totally agree with you there, except for in certain cases. I don't know about editing and what kind of classes you would have to take, but there are certain degrees that if you don't get started and on track as a freshman, it'll take you a lot of extra time to finish. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

Tyler T...i'd agree with that....but i'm assuming editing is not one of those tracks....and taking 4.5 years to finish school may be better than choosing your life path at age 18...know what i mean?? you mind will change a ton freshman year _________________ got premier? |

Camera boy, I either want to do stuff for magazines or tv, either or. I have considered all the things you said jester. At first i wanted to major in political science but decided thats not for me. I love to write and research so this is what i want to do. How hard was it to double major camera boy?
I think i will go to college, even though living in a car sounds really fun. _________________ if it takes POOP to make bliss then i feel pretty blissfully -modest mouse

Pfft, I'm disappointed. JT made it sound like you were gonna come unglued. Whatta gyp.
Double majoring is definitely possible, it just depends on what you choose. If you choose things that have a lotta crossover then it'll be a lot easier than choosing stuff that's unrelated. Like if you get a degree in math you can double major in physics 'cuz a lotta the prerequisite classes are the same. My brother majored in Business/Economics & Law & Society. It took him 5 1/2 years to graduate. Don't do that (unless you really like college). It sounds like you'll choose related stuff so you should be able to do it in a reasonable amount of time. |

My girlfriend is studying to be a nurse right now. She went the four year BS route rather than the 2 year program. She is gonna be making buku bucks when she graduates. Maybe even more than me. Sad thing is she is a year younger than me and is graduating in two semesters. Ive got three years of college, majored in architecture. Dropped out, moved to europe, and took up a four year apprenticeship in boat building. Killer money in it. But man four more years of schooling and apprentices get paid crap, sucks. But hell im seeing the world. _________________ jt09 wrote:

Right now were basically working on building small wooden dingys and sail boats. We did a bit with fiberglass earlier. Im trying to focus more on the wood part. Once i finish the 20 week semester at the school then i start my apprenticeship at a boat yard. I return to school for 7 weeks every january after that for four years. Im not sure what kind of boats i will be building untill i find a boat yard to apprentice at. I could be building anything from steel hulled commercial fishing boats to wooden sailing yachts. Or fiberglass speed boats. Not really sure yet, but im hopefully gonna meet with the owner of a yard next week and see if i can apprentice there. They build sailing yachts, fiberglass hulls, wood decks and wood interiors. So we will see. _________________ jt09 wrote:

Chales, yeah there can be alot of money in it. The place ill probably take a job at after i graduate is a two man operation out of wisconsin. They build two to three boats per year. They invest about 50000 per 28 foot boat and sell them for roughly 250000. But they are probably also one of the finest boat manufactures in america for this paricular type boat. Riva is the italian comparison. But the qaulity of the craftmanship of the riva is still not quite that of the place i plan to work. But that is awhile away yet. Maybe ill get more intersted in sailing yachts and pursue that more than the wooden speedboats. _________________ jt09 wrote:
