I would like to see a section dedicated to tow vehicles. Since we all have to tow our wakeboard boats to the ramp. I'm sure that reviews of parts, accesories, performance add-ons, etc. would be helpful. I'm guessing that this section here would be the second best thing though.

So heres my question. I want to replace the brakes on my 98 Ram 1500. Looking for others thoughts on replacement pads and shoes.

Thanks, Darin

I would think the best place to go to would be truck forums for technical information on your vehicles or maybe the boats & accessories forum for matters relating to towing your boat/trailer. Keep in mind that while most people tow their boats, a lot of people here store their boats or don't even have one and therefore don't have a truck or suv anyway.

I just think a specific forum for this topic is really straying beyond what a 'wakeboarding' forum encompasses.

Seems odd that there wouldn't be enough interest. But I'll take your word for it. I've always enjoyed the tips and reviews in different boat mags. Guess I thought that wakeboarding and boating kinda went together. And I really didn't think about boats not being towed to the water. Must be nice though.

Almost all brake pads come with a long warranty now, but that doesn't mean they're all the same. I buy brake pads from car quest and get the best ones they have. I think they're $64.99 for the fronts on my truck but they're worth it. You can usually find pads for $19.99 at any auto parts store but you get what you pay for.

Also, I know it's a problem with the heavy duty dodge's that the rear automatic slack adjusters aren't automatic at all. I give mine a couple of clicks at every oil change. When these are adjusted the dodge brakes work very well. When they aren't the front pads won't last 16,000 miles.

I agree with ONTRIDER, there are great truck and trailer sites. I look at them all the time.

i'm guessing your saying your truck has front discs, rear drum brakes??? do you know why it doesn't just have 4 wheel discs, i thought that disc brakes were a lot better than drums????

I don't think rear disks were an option on the '98 rams. I have a 2000 2500 diesel with rear drums and my friends has a 2001 (same as mine with rear drums.) Rear disks aren't really necessary on the diesels because without a load 70+% of the weight is in the front of the truck (the diesel is very heavy) so the back brakes do hardly any work anyway. With a trailer you should have trailer brakes that do most of the stopping anyway, too. Before 2002 most trucks had rear drums and front discs.

wow, i sorta find that hard to believe, not too sure why, because i'm sure the drums work fine, but on a decent sized truck i woulda thought they would have put decent brakes. hell my brothers 86 model ford laser had 4 wheeld discs, so's my prelude. i just thought that drums weren't as good as discs, which is why they aren't so common any more. please dont be offended by these posts.

I'm not offended at all.

Discs are better than drums. What I was trying to explain was in a truck there is very little weight in the rear therefore it takes very little braking power to lock up the rear brakes. Therefore, good brakes on the rear of a truck aren't as necessary as on a car where the weight is more evenly distributed.

Now most truck manufacturers are going to rear discs because drums are a pain to work on and aren't as user friendly as discs.

wes reeves, oh k, yeh i understand what you mean now, that does make sense too, unless your towing, but if your towing something that heavy, then like you said, you should have a braked trailer

Well, I've made some mods to my truck. It's a 98 Ram 1500, here's what I've done so far.
K&N air intake, the whole unit, not just the filter.
3" Gibson catback.
Hyperteck Programmer3.
Not sure what else to do with out going crazy with money anyway.

And 0 to 60 went down like half a second, maybe. Not impressive at all. But I'm done spending the money.

Also did the Airlift, and Edelbrock AIS shocks. Very happy with that.
