I thought I had a realy crappy weekend last week (transmision blew in my Jeep to start, plus about 5 other things) and I was feeling all sorry for myself....until I talked to one of my good friends on Tuesday.

He and his girlfriend (another close friend of mine) were coming back to austin from a weekend of partying in Houston. As they drove down I-10 just outside of Houston, they were involved in a 4 car accident. One car clipped another and then sped off...the clipped car spun and another car hit it...my buddy and another car avoided hitting the other 2 cars, but hit the barrier and crashed...my bud grabs a flashlight and goes running back down the road because he knows there will be more cars coming in at 70mph and the highway is almost totally blocked...he successfully diverts 3 or 4 cars, but the flashlight goes dead and 2 cars go screaming past him...he turns and yells in time for his girlfriend to run away right as the 2 slam into the already crashed cars...the entire group of cars blow up just like a movie - scary ass sh*t.

He and another guy are pulling people out of cars that are on fire, all jacked up - everything. One of the ladies he and the guy pulled out died - she was driving the small blue pickup and was one of the 2 cars that slammed into the previous crash, causing the explosion.

My bud, his girl and 2 others were the only people to escape without injury. I have seen all the pics and they are amazing. I am SO thankful they were not hurt! Here are the ones he emailed me.

Oh yeah, I felt MUCH better about my weekend after hearing about / seeing his!

I used to be a photojournalist for a TV news station here in Rochester. I've seen somethings that will make you want to lose your lunch. I saw a guy cut in half, i mean literally CUT IN HALF in a motorcycle accident. I've seen some stuff, man.....

I'll be the third person to agree with that sentiment.

What must have been the worst is when he was attempting to stop the other cars and his flashlight went dead. Talk about a sick feeling in your stomach.

Yeah - it was a pretty crazy story listening to it all. When he said "then the flashlight went dead" I was thinking, "Are you kidding? How many more bad things can happen?"

FYI - his truck is (was) the white 4 door chevy in the pics.

ill be the fourth to agree with that statement...one of the most scariest things ive ever been through was when i was learning how to drive and had gotten on the turnpike for the first time and see a semi(with no back trailer) blow one of his tires, spin, and then flip barely missing the car in the lane next to him which woulda have been me if i hadent let the guy in front of me when getting on the turnpike... luckily he hit no one and walked away from it with only some minor scratches

makes me feel a little better about the small accident i had 3 days ago. but my father works for an insurance company and on a few occasions his company has hired me to go and get wrecked cars/trucks and granted i got there like a day after the crash happend, i have seen things worse but that is still a horrible crash.

man...that's terrible. I don't know how I would deal with something like that. Pretty heroic of your friend to help everyone out. I probably would have been sitting on the side of the road pissing my pants.

Tyler T, unfortunately the woman they really had to rescue the most, died. He and another guy pulled her from her truck while she was still on fire and she didn't make it.

After that, he was looking for his girlfriend, screaming her name and couldn't find her. He was so tripped out he was throwing up, head was spinning. Pretty traumatic event overall.

Man that sucks JT. Good to hear that your friend and his girl were OK. That section of I10 can get pretty scary at times.

I saw a guy on a rice rocket die Friday nite on my way back to BigD. Guy was apparently showboating down I35 riding a wheelie and lost it. NO helmet, shorts and tshirt on. I stopped to try and help about 5-10mins after it happened.

Your friend is a real hero. You see those commercials about the teachers and electricians etc. being the real heros in the world but I can't help thinking that they get paid for it. Your friend and the "other guy" helped out for one reason- it's the right thing to do, and they followed through with it. Anyone else could have broken down and cried or driven off or just done nothing, minding their own business. They should be proud.

One thing I'm kinda curious about though... how did running off with a flashlight really help? And then he was running for so long that the battery ran out? Was it a really curvy road and he went through the forest or something? Because wouldn't the flames from the accident sorta be a good enough warning?

Chales - I don't believe there was fire until the second set of cars collided with the cars involved in the initial accident. I was wondering why the cars coming wouldn't see the stopped cars - would hazard lights not have worked?

Chales / Maestro, no curvy road - real straight Interstate - I-10 goes from Jacksonville, FL to LA, California. It was dark and rainy, so maybe that is why he went back up the road. Plus, cars are flying on I-10...hell, I do 85-90mph all the way from Houston to Austin every time myself. I think the batteries were pretty shot to begin with - I think the flashlight had only been on for a minute or so.

Also, the original crash did not start the fire. That happened when the two cars slammed into the original 4 cars.

ben746, not a Z71 - 4 door 2500 4x4 - I think you are seeing the 4x4 decal where the Z71 decal is as well.
