In some of the other forums and this one included I've noticed a lot of people making an incorrect corelation between war and gas prices. The USA is not currently at war and the increase in gas prices have nothing to do with Iraq. The USA recieves very little oil from Iraq and such a small amount could not increase gas prices as they have in the past few weeks.

Look at Venezuela where the USA recieves a good percentage of its oil. In Venezuela Oil workers have been on strike since december. This strike and the decreased import of oil from Venezuela has dramatically increased oil prices. Within 2 weeks of the strike oil prices went up 7 cents.

I just wanted to clear this up. Seems like the world thinks the US government is after Iraq's oil, which is not the case. If we truly wanted to lower oil prices we could stay in our own hemisphere.

I'm really not trying to post flamebait and I do not believe the war talk is all about oil but various scenarios around iraq oil production could drastically affect oil prices, up OR down
<quote>
Iraq is the world's eighth-biggest oil exporter, selling roughly two million barrels per day into the international market, and traders fear war could disrupt supplies from other producers in the Middle East, which supply 40 percent of world exports.

nah--i understood that but why can't we stop being so dependent on foriegn oil----we need to start using that alaskan oil for a good reason---then when we go to war there is no flucuation or if venezualns strike there is no change ---think of gas prices if all the middleeastern country's decided to stop selling oil to us or venezaluan rebels take over---we'd be screwed

moblsv---no matter how much iraq exports it will not effect america in a large amount of money----it may go up a few cents but not an extreme amount like the venezlaun situaition---as for other country's...they might wanna find a new oil source

Another big factor is that Venezuela refines well over half of the crude oil for the USA. You can see how a strike could lead to dramatic increases.

Here in New Zealand Gas Companies are using the Crisis as an excuse to push up Petrol prices.

It's Confusing, Because even if it is costing more to buy oil our ever increasing exchange rate should compensate for any price rises.

Personally I think were getting stiffed

But if other country's have to find new oil sources prices will go up for everyone. The demand for oil worldwide won't be changing, but the supply may be going down while we are at war with Iraq. So even if we don't get much oil from Iraq, the war will affect our prices.

but it will not effect our prices heavily----only by 2 or 3 cents a gallon----the remaining countries business would be widely spread leaving only a slight strain on our supply

The thing I see is that the companies are using the threat of war as an opportunity to jack prices. Historically war is good for the economy so this doesn't make any sense.
