ok sop like i posted a few days ago, i just bought a glastron gx205 with a I/O volvo/penta, my question is this, i grew up around outboards, and i have no idea about I/O, could someone kindly explain the proper flushing technic, and a few qeneral tips on proper upkeep of these motors/drives...
i go pick it up in about 5-6 days, and i know the guy is going to try and explain everything all in one breath (so to speak) and i would like to have a reference to flip back to every once in a while, and i dont want to be a complete idiot when he is explaining things, i would like to have a little bit of knowledge before hand...

thanks in advance.

I'm not very familiar with I/Os, but a guy that used to frequent wakeboarder.com has a website with a lot of maintenance tips for I/Os.

Here is a link to the site

Just sold my Glastron w/ Volvo sx drive. Had it for three years. Get the boat - listen to the guy and feel free to e-mail with any guestions. I have some prop solutions and other extras I did to mine to make it easier to keep up with.

CO Rocks does a pretty good job describing the basics. Read that.

When you go to set up the boat for wakeboarding, I have found you want to trim the boat as much as possible to get clean wake, go with a smaller pitch prop (17 is what I have used), and put weight equally in front and back (maybe even more weight up front).

I have a GX 185 myself and we love it. Just got a new WakeAir tower, speakers and board racks and can't wait until we see some warm weather.

For flushing the motor you need a good pair of muffs. You can get these at Walmart. Put the muffs around the outdrive covering the water intake holes, hook up a garden hose, turn on the water and crank the engine.

What engine do you have?

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Chris

Can you use a Mercruiser prop on a Volvo SX outdrive, or do you have to use a Volvo specific prop?

What are some good 17 or 19 pitch props for this boat and where to get them?

flsurflover, volvo and merc props are not interchangeable, although Volvo Penta SX and OMC Cobra SX are.

What powerplant are you running, and what model outdrive?

CSB, i have the volvo penta 5.0l with a 19 degree stainless prop

does that flushing flush the engine compartment?
if it was winterized correctly, it should have antifreeze throughout the engine, so is there anything i need to do to flush that? or is it similar to an outboard?

cstmgsxr, assuming it doesnt get below the freezing point of the antifreeze, you should be good to go as far as winterizing. The flushing he's talking about is just inside the engine, and it's identical to an outboard. You shouldnt need to flush it, other than backing into the water and running the boat.
