There is a benefit to having an exhaust that you can hear. It makes shifting more intuitive, i.e. you don't need to rely on the tach to let you know what's going on with the engine. My car's exhaust was on the loud side from the factory. I think it adds to the communicative and viceral feel of the car.

There are, however, exhausts that are designed to make what I can only describe as a tight-anused farting sound, which is not the natural note of the engine. Those are utterly stupid.

The funniest thing though is when I see a Civic, Accord, etc. with an automatic automatic transmission and a ridiculously loud muffler going down the street. The broadcast sound of the lazy slushbox shifts cracks me up.

i have an exhaust on my car and it makes my car sound agressive as hell! I love it. I'm glad my car doesnt sound like an angry bumble bee! I hate when a car sounds more like a weedeater than a car!

yea an exhaust is fine, just not one of those mufflers that hasn't hit puberty yet. And by the way, i can here the shift points fine, which is on a sedan, even if no exhaust noise was made i could here the engine noise. Especially if the windows are down.

what is really making me mad is that i am SICK of seeing 5 inch pipes on civics. even if it is a manuel shift. people think that if they buy a civic and put a loud muffler on it that they are "street racers"

yeah..well some exhausts actually do make a difference..on my wrx from the turbo back it opens up alot more airflow and gets rid of all the cats..it sounds alot different but definitely gives it more power and helps the turbo spool up faster.

yea some exhaust do, i could get 15 hp out of my max by replacing the f pipe I know your all gonna clal bs on this one but its because it removes pre-cats that most cars don't have.
