Which video format is best for its size for videos on the web? Divx? Mov? WMV? Mpeg? Avi? I'm looking for the best quality for size ratio, and something that is widely used.

Try a search on slashdot.org, I'd be very surprised if there isn't good information there

I think .mov is the best quality at the highest compression.

I would have to say Divx or WMV. .mov's are good but thats quicktime and they tend to get large. Most bootleg movies off the web are in divx. If the movie is like 2 hours or so get Divx if its shorter just use WMV they have the best quality from what i've seen.

Both DIVX and MPEG4 offer really high quality compression. But if you want something that just about everyone can play, then you should probably stick with Windows Media Player (.wmv) format. Quicktime is also good, but isn't as common as .wmv.

Like bill said, divx is probably the best for quality and size, but most people wont be able to see it. You'd be best to stick with .wmv or .mov(and about what chuckee said, use quicktime 6 because it is a lot higher quality and it doesnt get nearly as large as with the older versions that most movies are saved in)
