when you go into the wake to jump, you want your knees bent and when you approach the wake....stand tall....so unbend your knees...so you pop off the wake to get in to air

hope this helps...this is how i do it at least...good luck

okay, i should take this from the start. if youve heard about standing tall im sure youve heard of progressive edge. okay so youre out in the flats looking to cut in and go w2w. you flatten out and coast for a little bit so you dont get slack in the line. then you take an easy cut in and progressively cut stronger as you get closer to the wake(your hardest edge should be at the top of the wake) okay your about two feet from the wake and you estend your legs so you dont absorb the "pop" your gonna get from the wake(in other words if your knees are bent your board will be kicked up instead of getting nice and high). i hope this helped and if you need any more explanation just ask.

if you're really serious about ridin' go get a copy of higher education, it'll help you out with a lot of the basics....what everyone else said about standing tall is all good, i also think about standing tall as having the balls to not hold back. hit the wake hard and don't let your body lock up. just gradually hit it harder as you get accustomed to being airborne.

amoreno11, One thing that helps me stand tall is, when approaching the wake, i look across the wake to the other side. I look at where i will be landing. For some reason this helps me. I had the same problem you do. I think i was looking at the wake i was about to hit and for some reason i would bend at the knees. even when i tried to stand tall i didn't. When i started looking across the wake i stood tall every time. Give that a shot and see what happens. It works for me.

be sure and dont just lock your knees out, you want to make sure its almost just like you ollie when you're outside the wake, so your legs are getting straighter as you get closer and closer to the lip of the wake

All great advice. I am in the same boat, I constantly am keeping my knees bent into the wake, thus absorbing all of my pop. It is only natural to want to crouch down and absorb the wake. Everyone kept telling me "edge thru the wake", well that's not entirely true. At some point you have to "stand tall" without locking out to recieve some pop. I did it for the first time last weekend and got a bit of air, next time I will go more progressive at the wake. Also, keep the handle tightly at your waist, don't let it get in front of you, that helped me feel more comfortable during the launch. GO BIG! And keep vodka on your boat.

just because you stand tall doesnt mean you are not on edge.

Higher education helped me out a lot. Now i'm just waiting for summer so I can really try it, not being able to feel your feet sucks in the winter.

Look at it like your trying to jump as high as you can. The trick is you have to load your line, and you do that by progressive edge. Then you must STOMP the wake, think of it as the head of the man who stle your woman. Doing this with the handle held tight to your lead hip will result in massive air.

So could you just ride to the wake with your legs straight? Because I have been trying to jump off the wake b kinda of doing an ollie and it hasn't been working....at all. So in order to get height do you just need to your legs extended and your board at an angle (on an edge so not flat)? Thanks

jeffrey_25, you could but that would be pretty uncomfortable, looks bad, and you dont get as good of an edge. just cut in with a good edge and when you are getting close to the wake stand up. experiment with where and when you stand up and you will know when you get it right. you will be kicked up rather than just plowing thru the wake and getting no air and just making it to the second wake based on speed.

Alright so I should be NOT be "jumping" then and whereabouts do you usually stand tall? Like half way up the ramp, 2 feet in front of it?

its a fell thing i just do it dont really think about it now. it should be right as your about to hit the transition. experiment doing it early late and stuff and youll figure it out. and no you should definitely not be jumping. on certain tricks you will use whats called the ollie edge but thats later dont worry about that now. just edge progressively and stand tall.

Legs straight, but not locked! You don't have to crouch. Get a copy of May 2003 Wakeboarding Mag. It's got the goods on body position for edging. Or go to www.wakeboardingmag.com to order a copy.
