What is your favorite breed of dog? What breed of dog do you own, or wish you could own? My family just bought a Rat-terrier. That thing is soo fast, they are very stubborn dogs, but on the flipside they are really smart, and learn fast. Lucky(my dog's name) can jump about 4' tall Shocked I have taught her to high-five, army-crawl, dance, sit pretty, walk(on hind legs), jump super high, and she is already very very fast. I wish we could have gotten a St. Bernard(sp?) I love those dogs, they are just too big for our house.

Rotwielers(sp?) are great dogs, my neighbor had 2. They died because of old age Sad
vance, staffs? never heard of them.

Wake upPp, Pitbulls are great dogs, but they can get a little out of hand. My cousin lives in Jacksonville Florida, and owns 2 Pitbulls. I think they had to get rid of them because they were to violent.

Partyb, What kind of dogs are those? My grandmas last dog looked exactly like them.

ChumpChange, Beagle??? I cant stand them, they bark way too much!

I own two golden retrievers (Bonzi and Jaxson) and a pit bull/whippet mix (Abby).

My other favorite breeds are standard poodles, australian shepherds, and dalmatians. I would probably own one of these breeds, but my parents say we have too many dogs already...

We've always had German Shepards in the past, and now we have a Labrador. In my opinion, those are the two best breeds for today's world, with the Boxer coming in third. Actually, each one has its specific and unique uses.

Our lab is by far the most affectionate and engaged dog I've ever known. He is very sweet, and is always happy and loves interaction with people. You can learn a lot from a lab.

Just for a little clarification, American Staffordshire Terriers (amstaff's) and American Pit Bull Terriers (apbt's) are two different breeds. They look very similar, but are recognized as different breeds. A problem facing both these breeds, is both of them, and any mix there of, are referred to as 'Pit Bulls'. This just isn't true. Additionally, very rarely are these breeds born 'mean' or aggressive. However, many are bred to be 'game'. Game is a desireable trait in these breeds that involves not only their unrelenting need to please their owner, but also their need to be included in the family and loved.

Anyway, if you're looking for a dog for a grandma, I would consider a Bassett Hound. Fairly lazy, require minimal grooming, and good housepets. But some do like to eat everything! This one has had it's share of socks, boxers, toilet paper, remote control, packs of cigarettes..etc, etc, etc.....

Doesn't "game" also refer to the breeds eagerness to fight?

cameraboy, Another common misconception. I've researched these breeds fairly extensively. From what I've gathered, a 'game' dog is not more eager to fight, unless it's master has rewarded such behavior. A game dog is so eager to please the master that it will do anything to achieve that reward, even if it means fighting to the death. However, if a game dog is neglected, left out of the family, not shown affection, and/or abused, it will lash out in agressivness. At that point, there usually is no turning back and the dog should be euthanized. Bottom line, a game, purebred apbt or amstaff, will be an unrelenting fighter if taught to do so. But, scumbag dogfighter won't usually plop down $1500 for a purebred amstaff. They often mix breeds which can create an unstable temperment. It's really a shame.

Gameness is also present in other breeds. Take Retriever's for example. A game Golden Retriever will be a fantastic hunter's companion. The dog will do it's job in any condition, under any circumstance. IMO, this is a very desireable trait in any breed.

Oh I get it. So in a dog breed that has been bred to fight other dogs, then "game" means that it is eager to fight, because that is what the owner has required of the dog in order to receive the reward (affection.)

I feel bad for pit bulls and their owners. There is a lot of propaganda and untruth on both sides of the fence regarding pit bulls.

Nothing upsets me more than when people abuse dogs by doing things like fighting them.

Same here, I can't stand people that abuse their dogs! My neighbor at the lake kick's, sprays it with the hose(in middle of winter) beats his dog to death. That thing is so mean. Never stops barking. I feel bad for it. They have to keep it on a chain all day long and let it loose at night, so it doesnt hurt anybody.

I'm basically a pacifist, and I pride myself on making decisions based on reason and not emotion, but when I see stuff like that I lose it and become violent.
