wouldn,t it be a cool option if you could order a gps tracking device from the boat manufacteror.
if they glassed the device inside the hull at random places thieves will not find it right away...that gives us time to find our boats back.

not shure if it is possible.
good idea?
ben

lojack could be installed on a boat no problem. my wifes car has that system from the factory and the new hondas also have it. it took about 7 seconds to recieve a phone call when i unlocked the doors from the inside when the windows where down. oops.

i saw an add where you can slap a locator on your kids for 29.95 / month. logging on will give you longitude and latitude readings.

He Riverside

i know these things excists... i,m not dumb.
i asked What if they glassed the device inside the hull near a stringer for example.

i know there are seperate set-ups wich you can install in a car or bike or on your girlfriend if you,r in need of that.
big deal....find the transmitter (i,m shure there are special tools for that)remove the device and drive away.

now a glassed device can not be removed...cannot be replaced etc etc.
it would make the boat useless for thieves.

now i.ll ask it again, would it be possible?
cost?durabillity?power suply? etc etc.
don,t turn this message board into something stupid.
i don,t read half of the messages anymore....compared to the old days.

thats exactly what lojack does. they install their component somewhere inside the car (different for every one) and it will tell you gps exactly where the car is if you activate it. my friends stepdad has all his work truck installed with lojack and i believe that once lojack is activated, it also cuts the fuel to the engine making the car useless.

from what i understand, there is no power, or anything running on the system untill you call the company and report your vehicle. then the company activated the lojack on your car, and you and the cops can retrieve it.

is this what you are talking about.

Yea it is called lojack (sp) they sell them for heavy equipment also called heavyjack you pay a monthly fee plus the cost of the unit. It is real popular in Texas for construction companies since the border is so close. You just have to hide it well because my friend had a track-hoe with it installed and they found the heavyjack unit hooked up to a battery 100 miles from Mexico.

i don,t know any numbers but ofcourse there are alot of boats that have been stolen. The majority of boatowners keep their boat in the water at some harbor.
So do i and all my friends.the boats sit with only 2 simple ropes that keep them to the dock.
i have used a chain for a while but nowadays i only use them at the beginning and end of the season, when i am the only one out, except some yacht owners.

i do believe there are thousands people that are in the same situation regardless if you own a ski-i/o-yacht or sailboat.
never seen such a lojack device....but maybe it can be fiberglasses onto the inside of a boathull.(i will study the lojack page after this message)
insurance companies would be happy(i think)and could pay the cost for tracking the stolen boat.
All the big boat manufacterors should be able to set up 1 central centre.
Anything is possible but i doubt they will co operate because once somebody,s boat has been stolen..the guy collects his insurance money and.....yes Wink is going to buy a new one.

Are you on a lake or river or ocean?

You would think that if your boat got stolen on a lake they could find it easier.

Yeah all you need it double A's to run them. We have a portable one but it isn't hooked upt our GPS but something different and you use it if your lost in the bush and sends your location to the police.

Chump change, what if the people put it on a trailor and left?

llenta that sounds like a god idea, of course if it was stolen here it would be more then likely burnt. People do that here. Its fun (apparently).

Get a http://www.garmin.com handheld/portable GPS unit and buy a mount to hook it up to. Just detach it after you are done for the day. They run off of around 6 AA batteries. Your only problem would be getting it wet or dropping it into the water.

ya'll should really bother reading the post before you decide to post your 2 cents. Confused He is not talking about a GPS for your personal everyday use, He is talking about a device to track your boat may it be stolen.
