After 4 years of track and cross country and 5 years of wakeboarding my knee has been getting really sore recently. I don't know if it's because it's just winter or what. Sometimes when I'm walking down stairs it buckles a little bit or feels really unstable. I don't think I've torn any ligaments or anything but who knows. Anyways I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice on a good knee brace for the upcoming season so I can have a little more support on my knee to prevent anything from becoming really serious. Thanks! |

| See your doctor first to make sure you haven't done serious damage and to get his or her recommendation for a knee brace. I posed a question about knee braces to the wakelist and several people recommended the Nevin Extreme as a good basic brace. |

Just try to describe in as much detail as possible what happened to your knee, how it feels when you walk, jump, run, do stairs etc, if it makes funny sounds, if it feels loose. Point at where it hurts/feels funny. The more specific you can be, the better. The doctor will check for stability and probably do some comparison with your good knee.
I had a patella that liked to dislocate, but I couldn't figure out what was happening, I just knew it hurt alot whenever it was stressed and felt all loosey goosey. The doctor gave a little tug on my kneecap and I took a swing at him without even thinking about it....he said "Well, I think I just figured out what's happening". If you can, get a referral from your main doctor to see an orthopedic specialist and try to find one that works with athletes. My first orthopedist sucked, but my second one rocked. Sam Perkins (used to play for the Lakers & Sonics) was in the waiting room one day, so I figured I was in good hands. Haven't had a problem with that knee since. |

People who have followed my posts know my thoughts already: knee braces and helmets should be mandatory equipment for wakeboarders. Charley Patterson rides with both knees braced. Parks, at 23, measures the balance of his carear against how long his knees will hold up-- well his knees are meant to hold up for another 60 years. There's nothing "cool" about ACL rehab.
Be safe. I'd go with CTI2, like Jon said. |
