I have a 1999 Bayliner 2050 with a 5.0 Mercruiser 220HP with an Alpha 1. It has a 21 pitch prop at the moment and I was wanting to change it to a lower pitch. The boat has 1500lbs of ballast and normally 5 - 6 people. At the moment it is a big white hippo trying to get it onto a plane.

What sizing would you go for - 17 18 or 19 pitch x 141/4?

I'd suggest a search on this topic.

Basically, there is no formula that works for every boat. Find a prop shop that let's you demo props and put that money towards a prop purchase.

In general, stay with the same diameter and drop 2" at a time until you find the right compromise between hole shot and top end.

I'd highly suggest the money for an SS prop with a progressive pitch ( power cupping ). I've used one for years and am very satisfied with it.

On our boat im not sure what the pich and everything is, but i know we have a power prop, one that gives you alot of power, but it makes us top out around 27, but we really dont need to go that fast so its all good
