We got the 1983 SN!!!!!

Ok, so here it is, I just picked it up today for $2700 with the trailer. Most of the crappy looks is just stuff that can be cleaned up with some good TLC. I have already done a bunch to the boat and I will post more pictures as the project progress. I plan on restoring the boat with my own ideas also. The motor is strong. I did a compression test on it and got over 125psi on all eight cylinders. The tranny did not work, which is part of the reason the price was so cheap, but I pulled it apart today and found the problem, a bad tranny pump. only $179 on the net. The rest of the tranny looks good. The hull is in great shape and so is the rest of the boat. I cannot wait to get it into the water. Here are some pics... More to follow.

Be sure to post a before next to an after picture when your done cleaning it up. I've owned many project boats, enjoyed working on each one and made some $$$ on nearly all when sold. Sounds like you got the best SN deal I've ever heard. Great find . . . Enjoy

astro209, dont fret about the hull!! Pick up some sno bol, spray it on and wait about 5-10 min and spray if off. This stuff works wonder's!!!

sno bowl is toliet bowl cleaner... try walmart, or your local grocery store...

BTW, my local store has this stuff called The Works that does a very good job too.

make sure you wear rubber gloves when using it, it will burn your skin.

And make sure to wash the boat after words with soap and water!! I left my boat in all summer and there was some nasty looking stuff on the hull,found out about sno bowl and and gave it a shot and it made my hull look better than when I bought it. I threw on some wax to bring back the shine!!

sweet boat... Goes to show you that there are real deals out there if you look long enough. I rode behind that model at a ski school, and it threw a monster size wake with only 3 or 4 hundred pounds in the back. Enjoy.

I paid 5k for mine and thought I stold it, nice find it'll only increase in value from here.
I see you have that goofy bow devise on your trailer and a piece of roap holding the boat on. I am interested if you have any ideas, or what have others done, for fastening the boat onto the trailer?
I use a chain binder and a couple of clevis', it works but I'm sure there is something better out there.
One thing for sure is make sure it is strong, thoes trailer bunks are slippery after they get wet. My boat slides back every time I pull it out of the water.
While I'm preaching DON"T neglect the trailer bearings.

Here is what came with my boat to hold it on the trailer. I've also seen them on many other SN2001 trailers so I think they came like this. I don't really like it because it sometimes works loose over a longer trip. Here are some pics of the stops too if you are wanting to redo them.

BIGMAC, to keep that from working itself loose i would put some bolts on the threaded pieces that extend into the linkage, hand tighten them out until they are touching the linkage(the inside of it) when the boat is all on and the linkage is tightened, that should keep the linkage from loosening on a longer trip. Might be tough to find bolts that will fit in there though. just a thought

BTW there are two more of these boats available if anyone is interested. I have looked at the other two and they are worth the price in my opinion. But you will have to fight bleebdat for the location, if it were not for him, I would not have known about them.

Here is all the info. They only have one trailer left, and it is not in very good shape, so it might be a little difficult to get it home. As far as the shape the boats are in, I did look at the others, but not in as much detail as the one I bought. One has a good motor and tranny according to the marina staff. The hull had some medium damage, but nothing major that could not be repaired, and they wanted $3000 for that one. The other was similar but had a bad tranny, and no prop. I really did not look at that one very well, they wanted $2000 for this one. I imagine for the price, if you don't mind fixin it up and are good at that kind of thing, either would be a great deal. The other trailer (the one I did not get) left a whole lot to be desired. The boat that I got was originally on that trailer and I got the one that was in better condidtion, and when they pulled my boat down to the water to switch trailers, it sounded like a tin can going down the street. I would consider buying a trailer somewhere else and driving down and getting one of the boats. In the pic, I bought the furthest one, the one that you can see the least of. It was an 83, the others are 84's. They have been there for approxamatly 6 months according to the marina staff. I looked at mine for a long time, I spent about 2 hours total checking it out, but I only looked at the other two long enough to decide that they were not what I wanted. In my opinion anyone with some amount of ability and a little cash could really come out with a great boat no matter which one was bought. I would say that it would take very little to get the boats in the water and start using them. But if you wanted to have a really sharp boat, you would be putting in some time and money. Good luck.

All ski nautiques from 82 through 89 were "2001"s. Barefoots were also called "2001"s, but with a deeper V hull with chines. With the turnbuckle coming loose,tommyadrian5 has the right idea, put a nut on the eye and tighten it down to the buckle to keep it from coming loose. A inch isn't necessary.

Nor*Cal, it might make it to sac, but you would have to go slow, long trip, but at least the marina is right off of I-5, so you can jump right on the free way... If you are serious about this, you can get the boat and bring it to my house, I live about 2 minutes away, we can lub up the axle's and tighten things down so it wont be so bad. Also, I understood the same about the hull, from 82 - 89 the hull was the same except the barefoots. These boats are not the barefoot model.

Nor*Cal, Its pretty much the same hull. The wake looks just like the sn 2001. The barefoot has a 454 engine so it will handle all the weight you want to throw in there.

Nor*Cal, the point I was trying to make was that between 82 and 89, all Nautique models (only the barefoot and ski existed at this time) were dubbed "2001". The ski and the barefoot have different hulls, as I described before. The commonly know "2001" hull is the Ski Nautique 2001, there aren't nearly as many Barefoots as there are Skis.

UPDATE!!! I got the tranny repaired and in the boat. Took it out this weekend and it is working perfectly. I was very pleasently surprised. The engine is extreamly strong and the tranny workes smoothly. I do have a few questions though.

1.) The tranny has a faint sound while in reverse, sounds like gears moving. I think this is normal due to the configuration of the inside of the tranny, but I wanted to verify this with someone else.

2.) I have the boat in a slip, and in the water. There is a small amount of water collecting under the engine. While I know this is normal, what is the best way to deal with this when leaving the boat in the water un-observed. Should I put a pump in the boat with a float switch? The pump in it now is an automatic pump that turns on every minute or so, and if there is enough water, it stays on until empty. Will this kill the battery soon? I would say that in a 24 hour period, about 1/2 - 1 inch collects. Is this acceptable?

Other then that... We love the boat, have not gotten to board behind it yet, but since I am getting a tower then a dry suit, it should not be long.... I will get some more pics soon.

Also, while I do not speak from experience, it sounds like your prop shaft packing is leaking (I've seen those posts before).

Some suggestions and possible answers to your questions.

1.) every Direct Drive inbord I have been on has a faint whine when in reverse. I think it is normal.

2.) Replace the packing in the packing gland. Fairly easy repair. Go to west marine or another store like that and ask them. They should be able to describe how to do it. You can also buy dripless packing for an extra 10-20 bucks. This will keep the water coming in through the drive shaft to about 7-10 drips a minute. The dripless packing will eliminate any drips.
