i use either a canon gl-1, canon xl-1, sony vx-2000 depending on when and where i am. i use adobe premiere 6. for me makin vids is easy but i dont suggest premiere to a beginning video editor cuz its may be a bit intimidating and complex to use.

Sony 3 chips are the best DV cameras. Premiere and Avid are the best editors for PC. Final Cut is the best for Mac.

what makes you say that sony 3 chips are better than the rest? have you used other cameras or are you just proud of your sony 3 chip?

3 chips=3 CCDS (charged-coupled devices). If the camera has three, then the camera is considered a higher-ended camera with a higher quality picture then a typical consumer camera which usually only has one or two.

I am learning how to edit videos in Avid this semester in my post production class!! A friend of mine is going to show me around final cut pro...

I have only shot stuff on DV so far. Next semester, there is an 16 mm class I would like to take. Just want to do it for the experience and knowledge.

otiswunguy-I am not sure of the exact name of what you are talking about. I do know that anytime you use any type of analog editing (not digital), there is a definite generation loss. In layman terms, that means less picture quality.

For any kind of digital editing, I would recommend learning how to use final cut pro..

my friend uses the computer for visuals but prefers the speed and jog shuttle type design along with reliability. all editing is done on his big screen from the comfort of his couch. if you live in seattle you may recognize his work at the Showbox and other clubs.

Nor*Cal,

Get Adobe Premier 6.5. I've heard that Final Cut Pro is pretty good, too.

Cool. Is he just doing shows for concerts and parties and stuff like that? When I used to go to raves back in the day, I would see the visual guys and all of their equipment. They can do some cool stuff.....

are you going to build one yourself or go to dell.com (or ibm.com etc)?
if your gonna build a new comp get tons of memory and get as fast of a processor as you can. i would suggest at least 1 gig of ram and a 2 gig or faster processor. i would get a nice video card and nice sound card as well. think about a nice (big) monitor.
if you get a pc i would get premiere 6 or 6.5, and if you get a mac get final cut pro 3.

i think he is strictly doing the club thing now. i'll find out which one. if you can see the screens in the background you can see how complex the video is. lots of layering, fades and wipes. plus he can get media anywhere, not just from a digital camera.

I use a firewire that connects my camera directly to my pc. Cost me all of thirty dollars....if that.

If you want to do real video production at home, get a Mac and Final Cut Pro, but FCP is kinda hard to learn due to it's so indepth. Imovie is easier to learn.

For 90% of the people that will be making wakeboarding movies and putting them on wakepics, heres what you need:

Computer:
faster the better processor, I have a P3 7something and it does fine - but i wish it was a little faster
as much memory as possible - I have 512 and could use more, but what i have works
biggest fastest Hard drive - people always leave this out, you need size and speed(transfer rate) - there is a lot to learn about this but for the average person 7200 rpm drives are fine though - i have a 20 gig drive just for editing
firewire card and cable - to connect to the camera, I guess USB will work fine - but i have never used it

Camera - Any MiniDV camera will work fine. I've seen clips made with all different brands/types of camera and they all achieved their goal. As long as you can buy extra batteries for it and it has a firewire port, then it will do the job.

Software - Final Cut Pro has been called the best. But most people don't have Macs. Premiere, Vegas Video or any that you have heard of will do the job. Most people just want to make a cool little movie showing some riding, not Saving Private Ryan II.

Let's kill a rumor right now. YOU CANNOT DO DV VIDEO THROUGH A USB PORT! It has to be firewire (IEEE1394).

Get a Mac, then get a camera. It is that simple.

What about the Sony Digital 8 cameras. I don't have any first hand knowledge with them, just what I have heard. I've heard that you can transfer Digital Video over USB with those cameras. Can anyone confirm?

anyone know how final cut pro is better than premiere? im curious to know how many people here actually know how to use fcp or if everyone is just jumping on the "fcp is best" bandwagon. im not saying that one is better than the other, im just sick and tired of hearing people say that fcp is best.
if anyone has used fcp to put stuff on wakepics id love to see it. maybe fcp IS better, but since new years i have been trying out fcp 3 at my school and i dont see that much difference. if you want to see some stuff ive done on premiere check out http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=6106 or anything else in my sig. some vids are better than others...
