I'm just getting started wakeboarding and I can't seem to get much air and even when I get a few feet I tend to lose control. I have been reading other forums and everyone is saying to just straighten out at the top of the wake but I have been trying to jump as much as I can which is making me really inconsistent so can anyone tell me exactly what you guys mean by popping. ALso, what is the point of keeping the rope tight to your hips?

It's not just standing tall at the wake. You also have to have a good progressive edge: http://www.wakeboarder.com/display.phtml?id=50

Here's something I wrote in a previous post that explains the holding the rope thing:
I wrote:
A way to get yourself to hold the handle right is when you come in to the wake, don't think of it as cutting in to the wake. Instead, think of it as pulling back on the handle as hard as you can, like you are trying to stop the boat or rip off the tower. This will help because it's the line tension that gets you pop, and not your speed coming into the wake.

So when you are leaving the wake, you want to simply stand up not really jump?

Yep. Jumping involves moving your ankles, which would throw the jump off balance. Standing tall just pushes, which is the effect you're looking for.

when I first started this summer I felt more comfortable going at the wake ts....but I was 'jumping' to try and get air and it didn't feel comfortable and I'd get off axis a lot. Then tried hs and just got on a progressive edge and could feel the 'pop' and no longer felt the need to jump. Just today I started working on my ts jumps and after being comfortable with the pop from hs I'm getting the hang of ts a lot better. Standing up and not letting your legs flex and act as shocks which would keep you from feeling the pop.
