That's basically what I did. I took a 128 thruster and covered it with Gator Grip. It's part of my showing for Gator Grip.

See web page.

You could also just use grip tape.Old boards work ok,but they are heavier than wakeskates.

I saw a long time ago on some website I cant remember where a guy took an old board and set his skill saw up to cut a 45 deg. angle and you guessed it whacked the ends off of his board. the 45 deg. angle left the base of the board longer and the angled cut was toward the top. Then he glassed over the cuts added grip tape, redrilled for fins and shabamm -=-wakeskate!!!

Using an old wakeboard is fine if you just want to do some riding around. You can throw some griptape on there and it is fine. If you prefer barefooted put some surfwax on there, it works pretty good

I'm not really sure how much your board is worth, but if you could get about $80 for it, you would probably be better off just buying a cheap Cassette skate or something like that that's around $100. It wouldn't require much, if any, work and would probably ride better too.

Doesn't Leif use a cut down wakeboard with solbound grip on it?
Doesn't seem to hinder him in any way...
