I recently got into wakeboarding and we are in the market for a new boat. We have been looking at Yamaha jet boats, specifically the 2004 AR230. We really don't know much about jet boats. Can they be good wakeboarding boats. Surprised

No, stay away from jet boats. They have really small wakes, big rooster tails, cant put much weight in them, not much room/seating etc. Look at www.moomba.com for good wakeboard boats about the same price. You can also visit www.flipsell.com and look for some good used wakeboard boats including Super Air Nautique 210, malibu sunsetter, malibu wakesetter, mastercraft x-star, etc etc.

My neighbours have a seadoo challenger X and it is a beautiful boat. It doesn't have the greatest wake out there but it can seat 9 . The boat is 19'8 and has a nice sun deck good cd player and comes with a fat sac and has a huge storage in the back with room for more ballast. These boats are good crossover boats and can be good for all watersports.

If you get a jetboat make sure you get the new 4tech engine. My uncle got a Sea-Doo challenger 2000 and that thing has such and annoying sound to it and smells like crap. The thing idles really rough and is really loud at idle. You cant trim these so the have a rooster tail, its not huge though. I would recommend buying a skiboat or wakeboard boat, used or new dont matter.

Yeah i have a Seadoo sportster4Tec. The engine runs pretty quiet during idle and when its running. It is only like 15' 6" so it seats about 4-5 people and has a pretty bad wake here is a pic of it for you though.

Check out the Yamaha AR230 at:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/unitinfo.asp?lid=4&lc=sbt&cid=10&mid=352
Twin 4 strokes, 280 hp, 23', 16" draft, room for 10, huge swim platform, no rooster tail, a sweet ride if you can handle a jet.

i have access to a seadoo challanger 2000, if you have ever ridden behind a nice wakeboat youll hate it. you cant put a lot of weight in them to increase the wake, they are alot of work to keep at your riding speed. in between the wake its so choppy and disturbed you can barely stay there. you could get into a nice used wake boat for the same price as a new yamaha jet. they are virtually flat bottom hulls and they are very light so the ride is rough.

We have a 2002 Sea doo Islandia ( 240 hp V6 EFI) 22' it has cooler, washroon, sink with running fresh water , seats 12. Wake is OK at best. My dad does have a hard time keeping it at speed once your up. Great for 40 MPH 180 turns, this boat handles like a jet ski. Hard to steer when going slow, handles great at speed. OK for surface tricks and W2W, but there the wake is not beautiful Rolling Eyes

I have a sea-doo challenwer 1800 and I,m starting to try backrolls with absolutely no weight in the boat...

Only thing: As soon as their is a 10 pounds difference between left and right, one wake becomes choppy... THAT sucks... And since I'm goofy and that my driver is heavier than my spotter, I still can't make towside jumps right because I've got a CRAPPY toeside wake with white wash everywhere...

NOT good for wakeboarding is all that I can say...

Inboards can make 40+ 180 degree turns also and maintain the speed better. My uncles Challenger 2000 rides pretty good in choppy water.

you can learn to ride and jump behind anything, riding behind a wakeboat just makes it more consistant and has bigger wakes to progress on.

let me just tell you NO, if you jsut cant get out of buying a jet boat you can make them work, but they suck, i have a tower and 2 250 sacs in it and the wake is ok, but not the best.

Well its probably a little of both no offense to you. A boat with a bigger and more solid wake and a tower will not make you better but they make it much easier to progress and do better. So the boat is kinda slowing down your progression.

well there are 2 types of jet boats REAL JET BOATS

and those shitty as seasdoos,

this is my REAL jetboat 73 american eagle with a 455 olds berkley jet and jetovator.

it makes a pretty good wake, mainly becuse of the jetovator which is bascily a trim, its not the greatist but between the haul, and all that weight in the back it puts out a pretty danm big wake not the cleanest but its pretty nice, id say get an older ski boat that way u get all the good features of a good boat mins perfect pass and stuff but hey ull have fun!

also I have NO PROB with keeping up speed, ive pulled 3 skiers out of the water with little prob (minus bending the bloody ski bar) but thats because a 455 is a stroker any way get a real ski boat!

think of it this way, jet boats are for crusing only, there isn't much you can do with them. If you want to wakeboard, buy a wakeboard boat.

Hey Tyler,
What is your fuel consumption per hour on your boat? From what I know the 2-stroke jet boats suck down the gas, about 4 times the consumption as a 300+hp V-8, but what about a 4-stroke jet boat?
Thanks!

Ours is a fourstroke and it holds about 23 gallons i think. 1 155hp engine. We have never used up the entire fuel tank while out. In about 4 hours of riding from 15-45 mph we use up about 10-12 gallons.

Well mine prolly gets better fuel than a 2 stroke POS jet boat, thos 300 hp 350 ci v8's get better gas than me, I have to run Premuim im not cray about my fuel but its not very very bad, all big blocks suck back gas and ive only got 1 700 cfm carb, put 2-4 barrols and it would really suck ot back,

mine makes about 340ish hp becuse its got an agresive cam and all that other crap, but those 300 hp small blocks 350ci get good gas for what they are compared to mine, i jsut make a TONE more taouqe than a small block

But simply gas SUCKS! but its not super super bad i cant give u a calulation tho..

Im not impressed at all with new jetboats they suck little engine and tie drives suck

Were planning on puting a 454 crate engine in mine thats about 600 horse and 650 fpt if u out that kidna power behind any thing other than a bravo 3 ur out drive would be toast, but a berkley jet wiht a SS impeller can take any amoutn of power u can throw at it, if u have an ALu impeller it can take a mear 600 horse safley ahhaha

try that with an outdrive, but get a used ski boat man, as much as i lvoe my jet boat i wouldnt get one for WBING

and since i dont wake board all the time i love my boat, i love to go racing to =)

I hate to be the one that says this but all those pictures remind me a bit of white trash! I just know that I see stuff parked like that in trailer parks! Not so much the first one as the others..

Don't be fooled by Yamaha taking a jet boat, putting a tower on it, and calling it a wakeboard boat. It's not.

Go to www.boattraderonline.com. You can find awesome deals on actual wakeboard boats there. Check out '96 and up Malibu Sunsetter, specifically look for one with The Wedge. Also, early model Air Nautiques ('97 and up I believe). '99 and up Mastercraft Xstar's are awesome too.

Even though Yamaha tries to market the AR series boats as wakeboard boats, they never show anyone wakeboarding behind them. You'd think they would at least show some one doing an Air Raley behind one since that is what Yamaha claims to be its namesake. You can always go to the dealer and tell him you need a test drive before you buy.

you might want to watch what you say and who you may call white trash....most the boat you see out there are worth around 15 to 25 grand hell the motors them selves are around 9 grand yea there are a few that arnt so great but those are teh people that dont have all the extra money to spend on a boat......also most those guys are my freinds and if you called them white trash i would bet you would not be standing where you are right now (being your ass would be beat).....for example my cousin in one of those out there his boat is worth about 12 and still runs in the lower 70s and has a nice paint job, nice stereo, and a hell of a motor but most his money goes into his wife and kids and his house and what may come to a shoker he dont pull his boat with some loud ass redneck truck he pulls it with a 2003 chevy z71 tahoe......so just watch what you say and just because some people dont all the money in the world and some average boat doesnt mean they are white trash......what i do see is white trash is people that go out and stereo type people not pointing at anyone in particular
