| Not a typo. The guy said it had over 7 years, 1 million engineering man-hours, and 10's of millions of pounds invested. That would be cool if you lived in a city where you could shortcut traffic on the water. |

Was officially "launched" in the Thames in London only yesterday. It's built in Britain and the first 100 go on sale later this year. So how come your neighbour has one? _________________ Jeff |

looks really cool and i could imagine the price being that high. The only problem i see is that it planes at 30 mph. Thats faster than i want to be wakeboarding at. But i think it would be cool seeing somebody behind one of those things say on the way home from work.

They've had boat cars around for awhile, I saw one about a year ago on a lake here. It was funny watching them just drive down the launch into the lake without stopping. This one had a prop though.

You're right in that these sorts of things have been around for well over 20 years. I can remember a twin propped convertible that was sold in the UK. Had a top speed of 7 knots. A local guy who owned one said he planned to follow the boats down the Thames during the annual Oxford v Cambridge boat race. Only problem is, those guys row at about 20 knots so he wouldn't have had much of a view for long!
Nonetheless, a great boys toy for those with bottomless pockets and still a lot cheaper than a helicopter...... _________________ Jeff |

MrBlean,
Maybe BrtnDan's neighbor has an amphicar or something but not this particular car.
llenta,
I think it said that it planes at up to 30 mph meaning that's the top speed on water. It doesn't really matter though since the wake in that video looked pretty ugly. You'd probably get a nicer wake out of a bass boat or SeaDoo. |

In the report I read it says the car generates a tonne of thrust (a metric ton for our Atlantic brethren) in order to get it out of the water and on to the wheels. On the photograph I saw the wheels are shown partially retracted and it doesn't say if:
1) the wheels come out whilst it's still in the water and it drives out more or less conventionally but with the help of the water-jet
2) the thrust drives it out of the water on its hull, then the wheels are deployed afterwards
3) the the thrust blasts it into the air for long enough for the wheels to be deployed mid-air, after it leaves the water but before it lands!
Now that would be an aerial manouevre worth seeing Not only would it be an amphibious car but one step short a rocket car too. Eat your heart out 007 _________________ Jeff |

Unfortunately, I think it's 1 and you'll have to wait for the GTi for 3!
It has sensors that retract the wheels when the water is deep enough, so to launch, you just drive straight in at about 10mph. Presumably once you get to the shallows the senors cause the wheels to deploy. I don't know how long it takes though - it might be interesting to go through a small ford... |

Is that as in "Fiesta" or a small river
The idea of wheels not knowing whether to deploy or retract and hunting back and forth between the two positions in the shallows is quite alarming!
I think your GTi version would be much more fun and I've got my name on the waiting list. I should have saved up enough money by the time it becomes available but by them they'll have to drag me out of my cryogenic chamber and defrost me before I'll be able to drive it. _________________ Jeff |
