Can you get symetrical skateboards, because there's none in my local shop. I'd rather one that's symetrical because when you do shuv-its, you have to switch your feet back around.

That's weird that your local shop doesn't have 'em. Try online is my suggestion, you can get one for cheap if you hunt around a little bit.

My local shop is actually a whole sport shop, so they only have two types of board. I don't want to shop online because you can't choose a good board just by looking at a picture, can you?

It's true that you can't guage how good a board is by looking at a picture of it, but if you know a certain brand & you like it then that's usually all that needs to be said. Otherwise, make like VIP said & hit a skate specialty shop.

Hardly any boards are truely symetrical, you will usually notice the nose is wider and on a slightly different angle.

My brothers board is symetrical. But mine isnt. Would a symetrical board be better? Because like wakeboarder_dude22 said u hafta change it over when ever u do shuv its and stuff. There must be soem advantage other wise skate boards would be symetrical instead.

I guess you don't have to switch your feet back, but it feels strange if one kick is steeper and bigger than the other.

When the 10" wide asymmetrical boards were being produced there was a clear delineation between freestyle & ramp riding (street hadn't made a big breakthrough yet). Freestylers rode the thin boards with more double kick type design for flip tricks & pogos & such. The vert riders had 10" boards so when they boosted big airs they had a lotta surface to land on. As flip tricks grew in popularity vert riders (& all other skateboarders for that matter) converted to the modified freestyle design that you see today.

Jester, What exactly is freestyle? Is that like street skating? Or a combination of 2 styles?

Freestyle is the father street skating. Basically it's what you'd call flatland. Have you seen the BMX flatland event in the X-Games? Imagine skating a contest in a tennis court; that's freestyle. So basically all the crazy stuff you see Rodney Mullen doing like handstand fingerflips, casperslides, & primos all originated in freestyle. Plus that's where Rodney invented all the flip tricks that are currently being used today like kickflips, heelflips, & 360 flips to name a few.

Personally I never notice, but you can always just shuv-it back to your original position.

Not necessarily, Rodney didn't invent the flatground ollie until 1981. I know you've seen the Tony Hawk 3 video of Rodney, a buncha those tricks don't require ollies. Saran wraps, caspers, shuvits (not pop shuvits), handstands, fingerflips, impossibles. No ollie necessary.

Shuvits & pop shuvits aren't the same thing. Pop shuvits are the ollie version of a shuvit. You can throw the board 180, 360, or even 540 without an ollie. You basically throw it off the nose & "shove" the board into rotation. The pop shuvits are the modern version of this trick.
Impossibles these days are done with an ollie, but the original impossibles were actually done with your hand. Then they got thrown with your foot, that's the one you see Rodney do a lot, you just don't know it. In the Tony Hawk 3 video it's the trick he does up the bank (near the end of his segment I think).

Oh right, ijust though a shuvit was a shortened down way of saying pop shuvit. I do a few to many shuvits where im supposed to pop shuv it.
