I have recently learned to grab many different parts of the board on my HS and am working on W2W Toeside and Pop (still can't clear both wakes and pop). I can land my HS W2W 180 but nothing on my toeside yet. In order to be more balanced I am bringing my toeside up to speed. On the other hand, I am trying to increase my bag of tricks.
My friend said I should learn HS backroll first because it is safer than spinning tricks like 360. This is the case because rotational tricks can create spinning momentum in your upper body while your lower body hit the water which could easily twist your ankle, tendons. To me, safety is very important because I do want to carry on this sport in the long run. Any suggestion on what to do? Is it true that 360 has a higher risk to any newbie? _________________ http://www.wakepics.com/member/eugeneka

Don't worry to much about injuries. I have had many including a broken ankle, bruised spleen, torn pectoral muscle, and many many minor concussions. I was able to handle the pain, and I am not afraid.
You can be injured at any time in this sport. Inverts, spins, surface tricks all have risks. Just minimize the risks, go at a pace that is near your skill level, and dont drink and ride.
Everyone I know that rides hard ends up getting injured. Injuries are part of every sport.
If you worry too much about getting hurt, you usually end up getting hurt. _________________ "Our common welfare as wakeboarders shall come first, placing principles ahead of personalities......" |

eugeneka,
dont go too far above your skill level and make sure you feel comfortable. If you plan on doing something like a backroll , dont think about it at the last second (i.e right before you pop off the wake) or else your going to freeze up and hurt yourself.
Oh ya , dont let anyone push you too far either, go at your own pace. _________________ oh god its horrible |

| Man the first time i tried a backroll i was so nervous. I was really scared about face planting or some shittt like that. But after i got in the air i went into the invert and i almost made it all the way around. i didnt feel a thing. Ive had worse falls doing a butterslide. |

I agree with all y'all. I'm not even in the ballpark of inverts, and I'm still several TS w2w jump away from considering 3s. But this year - sprained right ankle with avulsion fracture on a simple HS w2w, very mildly sprained left ankle on slob 165 , and now a perforated eardrum on a stupid ollie that I wasn't paying attention on.
None of those are very hard or complicated tricks. Of course, maybe I just SUCK, but who knows... _________________ "Practice, man, jus' practice" - Wynton Marsalis

yeah, i do wanna clear up what i meant, im not saying go out and try a 313 or something, im just saying if you think your ready for a backroll, go for and dont worry to much about injuries, cause they just might, and probably will happen, but it could happen on a wake to wake to.. _________________ ur gonna eat it bad, everone does, but thats how u get better |

I'm with you on your wanting to avoid major injuries if possible. Of course I know it's inevitable, but to try to minimize those injuries I'm working on control and being comfortable with as many W2W 180s I can think of (switch and regs, TS and HS, BS and FS). After I get those down I figure I'll have a lot more confidence and a better understanding on how to not get off axis while spinning. I may decide to try an invert in between...but this is at least my plan for building up to a 360.
But maybe I'm just a little tarded. |
