One time i fell in a sitting position aiming towards the boat and i didn't let go out the handle and it pulled my hands(knuckles) right into the board at like 22mph i couldn't knock on a door for like 3 month _________________ Darryl's the name, Wakeboardings my game!

I ride with a helmet all the time for 2 reasons 1) it really helps when i catch an edge. I still get dizzy anfter a good fall, but never ends my day. 2) it has ear covers so i never bust an eardrum. Does anyone else ride with a helmet all the time even when they arent hitting rails n stuff??
One time I was starting off a raft, got a lil too anxious n jumped early. I decided I was still up and was starting to get pull so i tried to muscle my way out of it. Well it was the end of day so my hands were all "pruney" LOL and when the handle snapped out of my left hand, it tore every calus on my hand up towards my fingers. It looked pretty knarley but didnt hurt that bad. _________________ Glaassssssssssssssss Lake |

I've had 2 big injuries from wakeboarding:
- Dislocated right knee from one foot coming out of the bindings, but not the other. Very painful.
- Broken left tibia. Where the tibia & fibia meet, I smashed them both together, cracked both of them, grinded the bones down (because my instructor told me I was being a baby & that I wasn't actually hurt. Being the only girl on the boat at the time, I didn't want to be called a Barbie next) 10 weeks on crutches & a knee brace. Absolutely miserable. |

Just a minor one, but experienced my first injury on Saturday. Chipped tooth due to catching an edge at somewhere around 30 mph
To preface ... our boat does not have perfect pass, and my wife generally is the only person who pulls people with it. My wife does an excellent job of keeping the speed constant, and has had much practice pulling slalom skiers in her youth. I am not a skilled wakeboarder ... still learning how to do things .. but will take a pull any time I can.
We were out on the lake with friends, one of who had never driven a boat before. My wife was giving him boat driving lessons, including how to pull wakeboarders and skiers. This included such things as hand signals, what the spotter does (relays hand signals, lets you know when the person has fallen), proper speed, throttle control etc. He's a pretty competent individual, and catches on well.
I pull my brother for a few turns on skis, and turn the boat over to my buddy so that I can get some boarding in. Ride for a bit, a few jumps and a 180, new driver is doing fine.... good speed control, decent pull. I cut out really wide heelside, which led to the following chain of events.
Me: Begin cut in toeside for TS W2W (which are weaker than my heelsides).
Driver: Hmm ... he looks like he's going to pass the boat. That can't be good. I'd better speed up so he doesn't pass us.
Me: Launch off the wake.
Driver: This new speed seems good.
Me: This doesn't feel right ... I am not going to land this.
Upon landing, caught the meanest edge of my life, and after recovering from the shock of the brutal faceplant, discovered that one of my front teeth had a small chip out of the corner of it.
Got to give my buddy crap about this for the rest of the afternoon ... and the beers helped make the pain go away . My wife tells me that after a little composite resin work it'll be as good as new. |

i dislocated my shoulder when i first started (couple of weeks into riding) and i needed surgery. i was out for 8ish months and got back into it once i got healed. im about 95% healed as of now. i got back and just started getting my shoulder strength back... working on my edges and whatnot. and this april i started to do inside-out wake jumps. got those down pat. then started outside-in jumps. and finally w2w jumps. just take it slowly. one thing i learned is to never rush yourself. get confortable with 1 thing at a time. _________________ have fun out there |

...maybe it's just me, but people are making injuries seem very common
I've been boarding for a few years and couple days ago I landed in the flats with a locked knee - hyperextended it - but that was my first injury
I have seen a lot are headaches from failed inverts though... _________________ Zach |

Zcaithaca, I don't think that they are that common ... this is of course the injury thread .
Of course with any sport, there are risks, and I think that this thread is a good reference for what *could* happen. |

| jjaszkow, I had basically the same thing happen to me. New driver sped up while I was in the air. I tore the cartalage that connects the ribs to the sternum on my right side. I am out for the rest of the year. |

| buzha, You cant be scared of attempting a trick because you think you will get hurt, just go out there and do it. you wont progress unless you get the getting injured thing out of your head. just my opinion. |

thats a good point cuz injuries come along with all sports. theres no way you'll get better without just trying stuff. Just start small and it'll come easier. Don't push to hard cuz that will make for some hard falls.
I have watched some pretty bad injuries but most common is seeing a guy walk up with a concusion. I started wearing a helmet full time after a couple and it helps alot. Haven't had one since.
Just have fun |

rowlex, like anything, depends on the situation. I've seen pics where a foot came out of the binding and smoked the guy in the lip and giving him a nice black eye. There's only so much that you can do to try and prevent something from happening. _________________ Check out my comic strip:

I recently recieved a nasty case of grip burn, and the rail of my skate nailing my knee after a failed kflip. (I got the chance to skate in Florida, and no, it is not possibly to skate in ND/MN right now). _________________ 04 LF Trip 133

| The only injury I've received was a busted chin on my first tantrum attempt ever. Hit the water head first and my knee shot into my chin. I guess I've strained my knees a few times also but those were very minor. |

Slipped on the stairs down to the boat house while carrying two full gas cans. Slight concussion from smacking my head on the stair tread, but thankful that no one witnessed this fine display of coordination, or had a camera for pictures of the aftermath.
Does this count as a wake boarding injury? _________________

Thats it, after reading this thread I'm going to buy a helmet that covers the ears as well.
I've already busted alot in my life time skiing at 34mph on slalom ski and then doubling that speed when crossing the wake. Have busted my chin open 3 different times one the tip of the slalom ski |
