The funny part, is all 2,512 different translations given above are all correct.

Translating profanity is fun.

Who was that dude in the Eng-Ura game that caught that knee to the dome? Is he alive, or is he going to look like pet575's avatar now? That was f*ing brutal. Just happened to see it live at lunch... oh man i felt my face cave in when it happened.

I watched the entire game and many other games, partially. I just can't embrace this game. If I see one more cat go down like he tore his ACL and ruptured an achilles, only to jump up a minute later to join the game, I'm gonna puke!

Speaking of puke, I did a little in my mouth, when some guy got stretchered off, only to come back in a few minutes. I even heard the commentators talk about a guy possibly not playing because of a broken nose, WTF?

They need to fix the diving, or this game will never resonate with the US general public....

it resonates w/ plenty of the us public. the win over ghana was watched by more people in the united states than any hockey game in the history of ever. tonight's game vs portugal will likely top that.

hard to play w/ a broken nose if you can't breathe. duece could breathe fine, so he played.

1pt vs 3pts sucks, but 1pt keeps us alive. we have a 76% chance of advancing now.

Admittedly, I enjoyed the game...save for what killed the love above. I'll watch WC matches, but until I'm not crushed by the other stuff, nope....

TV numbers are like Olympics...nothing to do with soccer. Look at the TV numbers for regular play....MLS or Premier League.

Broken nose...lol... Yea, really kills hockey, FB or NBA players...with 4-5 days rest...let alone, NHL...they wouldn't miss a shift.

they would if they couldn't breathe, which was the issue. he could, so no big deal. you're trying to make an argument over toughness...about a guy who played w/ a broken nose.

lol @tv numbers having nothing to do w/ anything...ok. Rolling Eyes

The 'fake diving' has been this way for years now...hasn't stopped the growth in MLS much (NYC and Orlando will get teams in 2015, Atlanta in 2017, Miami in "TBD," all per wiki).

That said, I've never been a big follower of soccer at the professional level even though I've played at a decently high level my entire life. I dont like all the 'theater' and I think that much of the time it's quite boring on TV. In person it's a totally different animal (like most sports are, especially baseball) and I'm extremely excited for the upcoming Real Madrid/Inter Milan match in Berkeley even though most of the starters might be out due to their recent World Cup obligations.

They wouldn't miss a shift because they're only actually on the ice for about 30% of the game Laughing

Go have your kid run 10 miles in 90 minutes with a broken nose and get back to us.

But busting 100% of that time, :45-1:130 shift will break you, when you're in shape... Take a shift...

Point being, you can't take 90M shifts....

My 17 year old kid broke his collar bone on a shift and finished(when it got out of the zone).... Didn't lay on the ice, got up and skated off...

I'll add, think I read the ref runs a 10K in a match.... So what's that 6.4 miles in 90 minutes, your average house parent could run a 45M 5K? Hell, if it took me 45M to run a 5K, I'd hope I had a broken nose and a bum knee...

http://m.espn.go.com/general/story?storyId=11061471&src=desktop

CNN says the ref out runs the players....

Yeah, me too. Why did you even bring it up to begin with? Nobody here cares much about hockey players. It's a much different sport with much different challenges.

So your 2 posts related to it were just fodder? Yep, different sport...and I guess different challenges, being different sport...you know, ice & grass and rules ect? But no different in, I'm banged up and I'm going to toughen up or not?

But the culture in flop, which was my point and why I brought it up.

My point was not a hi-jack, but a comment pervasive in the fringe. If you don't see that or turn a blind eye, great... Again, I'm watching...but commenting all the same.

Hell, if not for the LO playing, assume I'd not be watching anyway and she bags on it....

Will most likely watch the boys this week and cheer like crazy that they can pull a draw/win, or get goal differential if not.

E.J., 16 million people watched us v ghana. the stanley cup has never had those numbers - those are comparable events. olympic hockey has never had those numbers - also comparable events.

mls average attendance is also higher than nhl average attendance.

you say ignorant things about something you don't know anything about, simply because you don't personally like it, and you're just flat out wrong. there are plenty of people in this country who absolutely embrace soccer.

back to the game -

WTF was that on defense in the last 3 minutes of the game?? Good lord. You are taught from a young age that you don't let anyone behind you, especially at the end of the game. get in their way. Also, Renaldo was out side of the box. TACKLE him. who cares if you get a card at that point. He would have had a free kick and most likely would have missed.

Bradley needed to be subbed out when the rest of the guys were. he was tired and worn out. He gave up the ball way to easy.

Oh, well. Bring on ze germans.

27.6M people watched the US vs Canada in the GMG in 2010....yea, think hockey has seen those numbers.... Laughing

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=519476

Average attendance is skewed....6M people attend MLS games a year, 21.5M attend NHL. The average attendance in the MLS is higher by 1K a game, as it is with the NBA, so are you saying that MLS is bigger than the NBA, because the average attendance is higher? Look at games and ticket prices...and television contracts....

I'm watching and enjoying, just pointing out what doesn't work for me...and saying stupid things.... Laughing

i don't get into these arguments about diving and manliness and all that, but you cannot deny that soccer's popularity in this country is growing at an astounding rate. viewership numbers for professional soccer throughout the year continue to grow, and mls just got a huge new tv deal. no, it isn't as big as the nba's or nfl's, but the league formed in 1996. it's not even 20 years old yet.

look at what the lower division soccer teams are doing in orlando, sacramento, and indianapolis. it's crazy. indy sold >10k tickets for each home league game this spring, and we haven't even won a game yet. sacramento are averaging over 25k i think for THIRD DIVISION soccer. people my age grew up watching european teams, spending money on their jerseys, and traveling to see their games. now, we have viable leagues here with our own teams to support, and the numbers don't lie.

Obviously, there is some variation depending on the position they play—midfielders run the most; the goalie not so much—but it's not uncommon for a player to average seven miles per game. Seven! SportVU has tracked players running as much as 9.5 miles in a game.

Sure sure.

Outside of my FB feed (and Mexican food joints), I have yet to meet many. Just sayin.

Aren't MLS stadiums typically bigger than NHL arenas? I mean, Staples holds under 20k and it is sold out most of the time. For what it's worth, HD Center holds 27k.

All that said, people are going absolutely bonkers for Sac's new minor league team - Sac Republic FC. They sold out of all games at their temporary digs (a local CC with a nice stadium, holds 10k+) and they are selling out of their games at their new facility (8k capacity).

So I'm not saying it's not popular here. Or maybe I am. Dunno! Laughing

Those numbers about how much the refs run is nuts! Hochuli ain't got nothin on that.

not every thing you see is diving. if you see the cleats going into someone's foot, that hurts like hell, but only briefly. About the time it takes for the ball to get reset and to get playing again. Shin guards help, but don't eliminate pain from a direct hit in the shin. Those are legit injuries that hurt like hell the moment they happen, but are resolved quickly.

Yes, flopping and rolling on the ground is annoying, but the injuries themselves are sometimes legit.

this is exactly my point w/ ej. it's ridiculous to even try and argue because it's like saying the sun won't rise in the east tomorrow - it's simply not true.

as for the numbers - i was going off of this, and it appears it was incorrect:
Quote:
BryanDFischer: If this is accurate: http://t.co/hHHlNqXXnz US/Ghana was watched by more people in US (15.8m on ESPN/Univision) than any hockey game ever.

however, in looking for that again today, i found out it was wrong for the soccer number as well, since the 2010 wc finals drew 24.3m viewers (and the usmnt had long been eliminated).
