Drugs are an every day part of this society. Only thing is folks like you have been spoon fed by the media that it is only the poor and destitute that use. On Wednesday, when recreational marijuana became legally available to Colorado consumers, pot shop owners across the state believe they collectively made more than $1 million in a single day of business.

feds have said they aren't going to do that.

the bigger issue is banks not working with the dispensaries because of the federal laws. there's all this money, and there's nowhere to put it.

pretty sure this is the correct piece: http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/medical-marijuana-will-colorados-green-rush-last-3/

With the money to be made, it will be interesting to see who weighs in on Federal Policy. When CA goes, I would be there is a push from many on the sidelines who stand to profit.

In ten years people are going to be bitching about their GMO weed from Monsanto.

The growing campaign for legalizing marijuana has a new, unlikely supporter: the National Review.

The conservative magazine published an editorial on Monday applauding Colorado for becoming the first state to make the "prudent choice" of legalizing recreational marijuana, "thus dispensing with the charade of medical restrictions and recognizing the fact that, while some people smoke marijuana to counter the effects of chemotherapy, most people smoke marijuana to get high.

The prohibition of marijuana, its editors argue, has led to "billions in enforcement costs, and hundreds of thousands of arrests each year, in a fruitless attempt to control a mostly benign drug."

"We make a lot of criminals while preventing very little crime," the National Review writes, "and do a great deal of harm in the course of trying to prevent an activity that presents little if any harm in and of itself."

I find it interesting that so many are giddy to pay the government a 25% sin tax to be legal.
I don't happen to smoke, but I find sin taxes to be offensive in general. I think I'd rather support some cartel in Mexico vs. the cartel in DC.

I'd rather support DC because maybe 1% of the money that goes to DC does some actual good.

I'm not a smoker, but I'm all for legalization of marijuana for the reasons mentioned in the article quoted by jt09. I do believe one of the rarely discussed side effects of marijuana is it makes people dumber while making them think they're smarter. Or, maybe it just makes the idiots more vocal. I don't have scientific evidence of this, it's just my observation based on the smokers I know.

ohsix, I agree on your DC v. international cartel view.

What is the difference between your take on the side effects of weed v. the side effects of alcohol?

It is called "liquid courage" for a reason. Laughing

I propose an index for drug legalization where the likelyhood that a person would suck anothers d!ck for a dose of said drugs is inversely related to its legality.

The "liquid courage" seems to wear off as the alcohol is metabolized. The "pothead IQ inversion" doesn't completely go away with the high. I don't know how many times I've been told by lazy, jobless potheads how many smart, successful people smoke weed. They always act like they smoke with doctors, lawyers, and big time CEOs regularly.

You mean CO... This is a state tax, not federal.

Apparently medical marijuana is significantly cheaper and let's be honest if you really wanted to smoke prior to this change in CO you probably had a card. I have several friends that treat insomnia, anxiety, ect... with medical marijuana... And in no way am I serious about their ailments, it cost $100 to get some Dr to write you a script and from then on purchasing at one of the dozens of local dispensaries eliminates the illegality (at least with local LEO).

I don't have any dispensaries in my county that you can actually visit. It's all done via delivery service.

i would happily pay an added 25% to not have to worry about going to jail. for the convenience of going to the store instead of trying to wait for someone to get off work, drive all over town, get weed from his guy, etc. for knowing i'm getting killer shlt instead of meh shlt. for being about to buy multiple varieties. for being able to buy it in multiple forms. all day long and twice on sunday.

Though it has been proven that weed doesnt kill brain cells as a "study" once showed, so any "IQ inversion" that hasnt worn off after the high was in fact there before the high too... Wink

The only proven downfall to smoking weed so far is breathing in burnt plant matter is bad for your lungs. It's not physically addictive, you cant OD( it would be easier to OD on water...), it doesnt kill brain cells, and it has an incredible amount of uses(not just smoking or getting high).

All this said I dont really smoke, but have tried it a couple times years ago. I'm a beer guy, which is actually worse for me health wise.

Edit: But yes, when people think they are smarter than they really are, weed seems to magnify that effect making VERY annoying. Laughing

I'm just stating that I really don't care for the principal of 'sin' taxes. I do feed the machine with my sin taxes on alcohol, but do so in protest! Smile
I'm guessing they can't tell if you bought your oz from a dispensary or a street pharmacist, no? (do you have to maintain your receipt!?) I didn't know it was a hassle to buy, my smoker friends have some delivery routine like the old fashioned milkman I think. I do see now how it could be a hassle for the casual smoker.

The problem in America with allowing people the freedom to perform any action successfully (legally), is our inability to allow them the freedom to fail. We ban drugs because we don't have the stomach to allow people to fail and die.

I agree with Okie in that what we SHOULD do is end the war on drugs. Let the the job market dictate the use of drugs. Let the side effects of drugs run their course. Some people will live their lives just fine doing recreational drugs. I know several successful people who are good family guys who party occasionally with coke. They have for decades. I don't, I've never done any drugs. Some will die from the drug, or die from breaking into the wrong house. To truly allow people the freedom to put whatever they want in their body, we have to allow them the freedom to die from it.

We as a society have grown to the point where we cannot handle ultimate accountability. We are burdened with "saving" everyone who sucks at life. Therefore, we have to limit the freedoms of everyone to attempt to reduce the burden those who suck at drugs put on society. So, we cant end the war on drugs as the people requiring saving will grow exponentially, not because of the drug itself, but because of the understanding that there is no consequence. The US society will bail you out of whatever stupid thing you do, be it drugs, sub-prime loans, or running an insolvent car company, why not?

Up in WA state there is all sort of political stuff going down in efforts to stop there legalization.

http://www.katu.com/politics/Rules-for-Reefer-Who-gets-the-final-say-240388461.html

Basically, a number of counties are refusing to allow legalization.
