I'll buy that, madcat.
If they ever tried to sterilize people in order to get them welfare, we would be just one step closer to having those people kill you and your family and sell your SAN for guns and food.

So if you are a welfare kid, what does your future look like?
Who do you blame for bringing you into this world 50 cards short of a full deck?
|
What? Who are you to judge who's life is worth living? What if you aren't on welfare, but you only make minimum wage? Are THOSE kids going to have a life worth living? How about we sterilize anyone who doesn't have health care? We don't want to pay for anyone else's delivery! F' the poor. They are all drug addicts anyway, right? How about if you get laid off, you shouldn't get unemployment unless you are temporarily chemically sterilized, until you find a new job. Don't quite like that idea as much, do you? Because it could actually happen to you.
This sterilizing issue is the sickest, most invasive thing a government can do to its own citizens. People will riot if you ever try to do this. Any kind of involuntary sterilization goes against EVERYTHING America stands for.

I know one thing little Johnny welfare is going to be taking money from the system just like his parents do.
|
So what's that going to cost me? I live pretty well on what I make. I'm not missing the money I send to "little Johnny welfare," and it's worth that small chunk of spare change to make sure we all keep our freedom, and that someone who really needs that help can get it. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Just to clearify, never said something permanent like sterilization and only if you took welfare. Just like a shot that lasts a month, you can hae more kids once your off welfare. When you get a dog for free at the shelter they check to make sure you have a yard, shade, etc... for the dogs benefit.
Think of this way, let's say you had a good friend that had a gambling problem. He gambles away all his money and now he is broke. He comes to you for money, you give him money but tell him he can't gamble with it. It seems ok to place conditions to people when you give them money.
Now welfare is all the taxpayers giving away money, if the taxpayers want to place conditions on their gift, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think I understand your point. The difference between you and I here is that I'm willing to put up with the abuses of the system to preserve the dignity of the few that use the system as it was intended. It seems like you put more of a premium on making sure abuses don't happen, and less emphasis on preserving the rights of those who use the system, even if they abuse it.
In NY, after 2 kids, you don't get any additional money. They put the limit on supporting 2 kids. If you have a third, you don't get any more money than you would have if you had only 2. I think this is a start at a compromise.
As far as the metaphor of the friend with the gambling problem, I think there are some differences here. The drug testing thing assumes that you have a drug problem, and asks for you to prove you don't. You already KNOW that your friend has a gambling probloem.
How's this: If you are on welfare, and get caught with illegal drugs in any way, shape, or form, even just being in the company of someone in possession, then you are inelligible for welfare benefits for a period of time or untill you complete a drug rehab program, and THEN you have to take drug tests to continue to get money.
This way, people who haven't done anything wrong won't be subjected to the indignity of drug testing just because they are in a really bad place financially. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Drug testing? Forced birth control? I cannot believe I am reading this! Aren't you the same people who just tried to justify a war by saying you were 'liberating' the oppressed peoples of a country?
Unreal.
You guys would hate Australia. We are taxed a LOT higher than you and yet I am still willing to pay my taxes if it goes to helping people who need it.
As a one time student who recieved payment from the government, I would be a hypocrite if I tried to deny the same benefits to others.
By the way, I don't do drugs, I would consider myself anti-drug (I believe they have negative health and social effects, but I don't frown upon people who use them, hey, it's your choice) and I'm not planning on having any kids any time soon. I would pass these 'tests', but I don't believe others should have to. _________________ Terminate high thinking |

I hate to piss people off, well, actually its fun to piss people off, but criminally minded, your telling me that you dont take aspirin when you have pains or headaches? Cuz aspirin is a drug.
I think people who get welfare should be free to spend the money any way they want, and that the government shouldnt have any restrictions on giving welfare out. My dad was on welfare cuz he got layed off, and i dont think the government should deprive people of welfare cuz they have personal problems. You guys also shuld know that you can only receive welfare for a certain number of years, after that, the govnerment wont give you any more money. So dont get thinking that people are skating through life on your tax dollars. _________________ "I knew those girls were pros, but don't tell Turtle, it'll break his heart." - Drama, Entourage |

Mr C - Ok I'll take that one. You knew what I meant, but I'll take it. If you're going to be pedantic though, shouldn't you be campaigning to have the thread changed to 'Illegal Drug Testing for Welfare'? I don't think they are going to stop your payments because you drink coffee.
Good point about the length of welfare payments also. _________________ Terminate high thinking |

I'm not like that, i just do it to annoy people:D I cant resist, but i guess i should learn some self-control. You never know when i might mess with the wrong person and get myself into a situation i never meant to happen. _________________ "I knew those girls were pros, but don't tell Turtle, it'll break his heart." - Drama, Entourage |

Don't worry about it, annoy away! It can teach people to be more specific about what they mean, which isn't a bad thing. _________________ Terminate high thinking |
