A gasoline engine suffers more from turbo lag than a diesel. The RPM in a gasoline engine is controlled by how much air is let in, the air/fuel ratio is fixed. In a diesel the RPM is controlled by how much fuel is let in, the air/fuel ratio changes. A gasoline engine has a larger difference in the volume of its exhaust over the RPM range than a diesel engine, since turbo's run off the exhuast the effect of turbo lag is a bigger issue in a gasoline engine. Most of the energy your engine losses is in the exhaust, so using a turbo instead of a supercharger is more efficient.
