1 game in and I have to say that the US has got to be the favourite to the win the gold. Man they looked good in the first game. Russia might win the round robin game on pure emotion, but I think the US rolls the rest of the tournament after that.

Canada will be lucky to make the bronze if they keep throwing out those crappy lines.

Rooting for JVR and Kessel, almost would be cool with them winning the gold if it made some people realize how good Kessel is.

Canada obviously looked a lot better today, but they can't keep dressing Kunitz just because he happens to play with Crosby on a Pens team short on quality wingers.

Surprised with the offense of the US, knew they'd be solid in net! It was just a game and I'm still just hoping for a medal for the US.

Actually in Jackson Hole for a hockey tourney, so will have to see what games I can catch(who knows what stations I get at the resort).

Kunitz looks like a peewee out there against pros. Just terrible. They need to start skating some better players with Crosby...can't have the best player not playing with the best and expect him to be an impact.

Canadian defense looks unreal though...they are dominating.

Kessel to me looks like one of the most dangerous players in the tournament.

Smart fans know how good he is but there exists a segment of the hockey world that still complains that "all he does is score" and that he doesn't play physical enough. Just last summer a Toronto sportswriter suggested the Leafs should trade Kessel and every time he doesn't score for a stretch the questions start again. He's an awkward interview and I think some of the media holds that against him.

my impression of toronto sports fans, at least on the hockey side, is that they are emotionally traumatized and nothing they say should be taken at face value.

lolz! suck it, rooskies!!

Quote:
MOSCOW -- After a heated U.S.-Russia hockey match at the Sochi Olympics on Saturday, many Russian spectators have decided the cold war is back -- and not just on the ice.

Demonstrators gathered in Moscow on Monday to protest a official's call disallowing a goal by Russia late in regulation of a game ultimately won by the U.S. in a penalty shootout.

The protesters, organized by a Kremlin party youth group, donned Russian hockey jerseys and shouted, "Make soap out of the ref!" -- a common expression among Russian soccer fans.

Wielding a banner with a photograph of the American official, Brad Meier, many of the protesters used cheese graters to grate soap into buckets.

The goal, which would have given Russia a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes left in the third period, was disallowed after officials ruled the net had come loose from the ice before the goal was scored. Russian fans, who had leapt to their feet in celebration, howled with rage as the call was announced.

The supervisor of officials for the International Ice Hockey Federation, Konstantin Komissarov, confirmed the ruling made by the on-ice officials was correct and that video review had been properly used to make the call. But that hasn't mollified Russian spectators, who in a rare unifying moment have come together from both ends of the political spectrum to air their grievances -- and their conspiracy theories.

After the call was made, commentators on state television at first seemed unable to overcome their shock, shouting "How can this be so?!" They spent much of the rest of the game muttering resignedly about Meier's nationality.

Komsomolskaya Pravda, one of the country's most popular newspapers, carried a photograph of U.S. goalie Jonathan Quick -- a red circle drawn around his hand, which appears to be pushing one goal post backward -- beneath the headline: "An American referee and the puppet international federation deprived us of a deserved victory."

One state-owned channel ran an hour-long talk show dedicated to the disallowed goal.

"Judges don't have nationality?!" Alexei Pushkov, a Kremlin-connected member of parliament, fumed on Twitter. "How interesting. And how come they didn't appoint a referee from Russia, but an American?"

Even Russia's liberals joined in the fight.

"I agree with everything said about the referee," wrote corruption blogger and opposition activist Alexei Navalny. One liberal website, Lenta.ru, wrote that the "Jewish masonry" was clearly involved in the call, making a joking reference to Soviet-era conspiracy theories about the West.

President Vladimir Putin, who was one of the unhappy fans at the Sochi rink on Saturday, told Russian state news agencies Monday that the game "should have been stopped" if the goal was out of place but asked for fans to show sportsmanship.

"Even if the judge was wrong, we mustn't stick labels on anybody," he said. "We can't forget that sport takes courage, but also luck."

Thy Stanley come

And lead Kadri not into Backstrom
But deliver us The Cup

any predictions for the mens game?

As a general hockey fan I actually would like to see the US win, get some incredible media coverage, and see a few more hockey fans where they wouldn't neccessarily have been before.

Saying that....I'll be rooting Canada.

4-1 US with 1 or 2 empty net goals Smile

i want so badly for this to be our year where we break through and beat y'all, and it certainly looks like we're poised to do that. but, until we actually beat y'all in a big game, i'm not particularly confident.

i will be apoplectic if that little bltch scores the game winner again.

granted - we should have closed that out in regulation. we choked to let canada take it to ot, but those calls were terrible in extra time.

holy exciting finish batman.

womens hockey in general not that good. most scoring chances come from turnovers vs someone creating an opportunity. But they play with so much emotion in the big games and its back and forth. its like watching 2 bad college basketball teams play against eachother in a tournament.

The women's game never seems to have great reffing. That slash call was pretty weak.

Have to feel for the Kessel family. Part of two big-game late collapses in less than a year.

Seriously, she'll be crushed....

Have had a rough < 24 hours in hockey game ending goals. Last night in the State Tournament, HS boys(#4) lost to the #1 in a shootout. (still in, double elimination, 6 teams left, 4 after tonight)

canada defence and overall team defence were just too much for the US. not an overly exciting game.

Price played very well, i thought for sure the US would get more chances though.
