I, for one, am glad that china got the olympics. I think that the world attention on china will be ultimately a good thing.

The Ceremony was amazing when all those people came out of the boxes it was crazy that they did that whole thing on timing and practice. It goes to show that the chinese are very precise and take pride in what they do. WAY TO GO CHINA!

Anyone else feel like they were being fed propaganda A LOT during all that. Don't get me wrong it was really sweet and I enjoyed it but the whole China being so open now just caught me as bull crap.

For what exactly? Females have competed for Iraq at the Olympics before.

But to avoid a political hijack, I think this statement summed it up best:

Quote:
A recent CNN report found Hussein’s trainer, Yousif Abdul-Rahman, consoling her after the ban by saying, “You can compete in 2012.”

To which a sobbing Hussein responded, not rhetorically, “Who can say if I’ll even be alive in 2012?

i love the olympics.

it's basically the only sport that doesn't "defend" ones country against another. it's a game of representation, which i definitely respect more than defense of your country. it's a fun time for both the athletes and fans and it's my favorite event of all time (besides anything wakeboarding Wink )

I thought that was amazing as well. Pretty much fooled me into think it was all done electronically.
Also the circles and no markings on the ground, they were still able to stay in perfect formation with 2000+ people involved.

I think they will dominate in gymnastics because:
- USA mens don't have the Hamm brothers
- majority if not all the female gymnast are all under aged and they are lying about it.

This is terrible.... Crying or Very sad

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26104003

Relative of U.S. coach killed in Beijing attack
One other American, local guide also injured by knife-wielding Chinese man

BEIJING - A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men’s volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.

The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site.

The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

It's going to be interesting.
Memmel does have a bad ankle and there's only 2 experiences & consistent gymnasts.

That precise preformance totally makes up for the poison dog food, the lead in the baby toys, and the horrible polution. Indeed, they must be swelling with pride.

Nice to see that the landlords CAN pull their stuff together, at least for the opening cermonies.

But seriously, I didn't watch and I heard that they were absolutely phenomenal. I'm sorry I missed them.

Wished I would have caught it, the opening ceremonies are always pretty cool. I can still remember the ceremonies in Atlanta when they dubbed in bits of MLKs I Have a Dream speech.

However, NPR has been featuring the Olympics and China every morning on NPR for the past could of weeks. There just seems to be too much shadyness going on behind the scenes. Hopefully, this will be a good thing for China going forward.

With the team gymnastics format now "3 up, 3 count" ANYTHING can happen. One fall and game over. Shawn Johnson is rock solid, but all the rest have had bouts of inconsistency.

We watched the opening ceremonies this morning on Tivo. Got through 4.5 hrs of programming in 1.5 hours. Loved the opening with 2008 guys in sync drumming. Loved the torch lighting, although it took a long time. Cried at the story of the little boy who walked out with Yao Ming. First of several cries I'm sure. Not a big crier, but for some reason, the stories of overcoming adversity and of course hearing the national anthem always get me.

Everything behind the scenes is being controlled.

please don't jack this thread up w/ all the political bs. take it to another thread.

freaking usa soccer. how maddening to play so aggressive and then lose the win on such a stupid, stupid penalty. it's going to take a miracle to tie nigeria w/o adu. hell, even w/ him it would have been very difficult. blowing a chance to medal w/ less than a minute left....sheesh. Confused

men's hoops struggling w/ the outside shot. i think kobe had a 3 in the 1st half, but damn near every other point has come on dunks or fts.

Libby Trickett swam the fastest split in history. Dara Torres swam the seconfd fastest. However, who cares. At 41 it's still amazing what she did.

Thank god for balance beam today for those female gymnasts. 2 HUGE falls on bars. Step outs on floor?!?! They should've done much better... but they're still in second.
