what's the deal with today's poll question. not the actual question but the fact that so many prople think that it's acceptable to pose for a pic. what's next superimposing a guy 10 feet higher than he actually is to look cool? hopefully people misinterpreted the ? (or i did) cause i think posing for pics is a disgrace and wakeboarding deserves to get made fun of if this actually happens.

I have seen posing for pics in skateboarding, but can someone explain how its done in wakeboarding? I mean you're either upside down grabbing the board or you're not.....

I can see how some slider shots could be posed, but why bother?

Does anyone have an examples of this?

I personally think its good to have a little bit of mixture in magazines, not a lot but a page or two of a rider posing, showing their lifestyle and what not. I don't know why its such a big deal.

Jrock, maybe its me who's confused, but I don't think Derrick is talking about lifestyle type photos, but 'posed' photos of a trick, like climbing on a slider, having someone pull the rope taunt, and then taking a snap so it looks like your 'riding' it. Lots of kids pull the same sh*t in skateboarding, sending their 'posed' pictures into magazines. It's usually really obvious, so much so that THRASHER has a 'poser of the month' section for obviously posed photos which have been submitted by readers.

Is that what your on about Derrick? Or am I just completly off track.... Embarassed

no that's exactly what i'm talking about. in the last wbm there was a letter about trevor hansen posing for an ad. personally i haven't seen it so i can't say whether it looks like it(don't think he'd need to either) or not but then i came on the site and saw the poll. seriously why would you need to pose for a pic if your good enough to be in the mags.

I'm sorry, but i don't really see the big picture i guess. Whats so bad about it? Is it really going to tear the sport down? I think if thats what the company wanted, then thats what they were going to get, and he probably didnt have any say into the whole deal anyway.

Of course you have a say as to wether or not you pose for a pic. I agree that you must make the sponser happy, however, they aren't sponsering you for your ability to stand completely still while having your picture taken. This sport has had to come a long way to be taken as a "legitimate" board sport. I don't know why, but it has. This "posed picture" thing is absolutely bad for the sport's image. Now all you have to figure out is wether or not you care about the sport's image. Personally, I love to ride wether someone thinks it's a legitimate sport or not. Pros should appease their sponsers but they also need to appease the sport they are earning a living in. I am not attacking you Wakeboy551, I respect your opinion but I thought I would share mine as well. Laughing

no offense taken, but i still can't get past why everyone is throwing fits over it. I understand it doesn't show his true ability, but if he knows it, and his sponsors must know it for the pure reason they are sponsoring him, and everyone else knows he can ride, whats the big problem? Its not like every pic is posed, and maybe for some reason we don't know it wsn't possible to get that shot. Do you know how much easier it would be to get that shot in a studio as opposed to out in the real deal?

just more of my money in on it, and i'm not trying to piss everyone off, jsut raising some conversation

Luckily, I don't think this has ever come up before, so they obviously don't need to do it often. It just seems to me that a "staged" photo would be more work than a "live" one. I don't really get their motivation for it!?! At any rate, to get that same photo of me it would require a crane, some cables, and probably a stunt double! Shocked So I can't really talk too much crap about it, can I?

I don't think posing will ever really be a problem for wakeboarding because it's not really a posable sport... Aside from a few slider shots, you can't really pose at all. You couldn't pose upside down for in invert, or pose in the sky for a huge double up. Even if you could, it would look so fake it would be pointless.

Wow, that looks a lot worse than I thought. I don't really get the point. It would've looked a lot better if it was real.

Yeah, but he can do that slider, and probably pull a 7 off of it. Now if it were me standing up there posing, it would be different.

Check out the Feb. 2003 Buyers Guide issue of Wakeboarding on p. 135 (the issue with Emily on the front). It is the exact same photo from an almost impossible angle. Again, who cares, but they could have at least "tried" to make it look real!

man that is just pathetic. my respect for trevor hansen has just dropped. everyone knows he could do that slider but yet it appears very posed to me. i just don't understand why someone of his caliber would do something lije that.

Unless he is right behind behind a jetski (within 10ft) there is no way that the rope should be angled down like that.

I believe the letter to WBM was written by someone important to the industry, that's why he didn't sign his real name.

The photo from an "impossible angle" is from an angle that is not impossible, but is very difficult. The photog would either have to have very fast reflexes to get the camera in right after he passes by, or have the camera mounted on a pole and be riding alongside Trevor. This is how some video shoots work where they have clips with angles like that...moving straight down the slider.

I don't want to debate whether or not the photo is fake...It doesn't look real to me. Looks pretty lame. I just wanted to agree with what's already written.

Mike is right on about who wrote the letter. I will say it does have a certain weak quality to it, but I also take into consideration that it is an ad, not a "riding pic". Ads in WBM have been posed/photoshopped for years, therefore Im not too offended by it. However, it does have a weak quality and will tarnish the riders rep too many "core" riders.

wow that one is even worse in my opinion for that to be real the camera would have had to be on top of the rail in between the two pvc pipes looks very "poserrific" to me

The camera angle is cool, but gees the guy is not going to earn cred by doing posed pics, it is not as if he cant do it for real or anything the guys can ride big.

You would think that if it is that easy to tell if its fake they wouldnt do it. I hope that they dont have anymore like that.

Since "SlipperyP" makes his living from wakeboarding, it is in his best interest to keep the reputation of the sport high. Having photogs like Mike Isler back most of his points lends a little more credence to his accusations. I have a feeling that the editors at WBM knew who the writer was and were using their reply to get back at him for calling them out. Trevor is a great rider, hopefully he will take a little more creative control of his ads and end up in some great wakeboarding movies like High Wake Drifters.
All of this is the opionion of me, a rider with few skilz. Wink Embarassed
