I talked to my friend last night. He lives in CA, so this should fill us all in that didn't know. He said he can get his rights back and here are the terms:

1. Non-violent felony
2. At least 10 years since the last felony
3. Fill out paperwork, go to court, and pay a $1300 fee

While I'm still purist in my thoughts that rights should only be taken away while serving the sentence, I can see how this might be considered somewhat of a reasonable compromise.

How does society need to be protected from a convicted felon (who was convicted of a non-violent, non-weapon crime)? What is the rational relation for keeping a gun out of that guy's hands?

This seems so clear to me that I must be missing something. Someone who has previously committed a crime should get more scrutiny than a person who has not. That is part of the package when you violate someone else's liberty-you give up some of your own.

What does a gun have to do with a non-violent felon? No relationship whatsoever.

Also you do not have to violate someone else's liberty to commit a felony.

Seems reasonable to me. Is it simply procedural or is there discretion involved? Norcal?

jgriffith, mostly procedural. There are several crimes, usually violent or where brandishing a weapon took place, that are lifetime bans. Others you can go through this procedure for restoration of the right.
