Actually a pretty legit ice storm. Bunch of moisture coming over Mexico from the Pacific, warmer air from the GOM and the arctic blast from AK/Can. Been getting below freezing for 2 days and we're getting steady sleet and freezing rain. Suposed to keep coming through tomorrow.
If we were up North it would be no big deal because you have the tools to deal w/ it. We have no salt/sand trucks down here. At least not enough to make a difference.

I thought that was some sort of new Texas slang "Who's iced broham?"
That sucks though. Especially for Texas... we had freezing rain yesterday for about 5 hours.

NO BOLD FOR YOU
Sammy Sosa works out for Rangers
The Associated Press
Published January 15, 2007, 11:36 PM CST
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Sammy Sosa worked out again Monday for the Texas Rangers, the team he began his career with, before meeting general manager Jon Daniels and other club officials.
"The workouts and subsequent conversations have been positive. He seems committed to proving himself again -- made it clear he wants to contribute to a winning environment," Daniels wrote in an e-mail late Monday night. "We had good baseball discussion about our club, where he's at in his career, and whether there's a fit."

Money, money
Is it crazy to sign players to contracts worth $100 million dollars or more?
Who needs that much money?
If the skills are there, pay them
It's setting a bad precedent
Daniels said Sosa, who hasn't played in the major leagues since 2005, had previously worked out for the Rangers in the Dominican Republic. The latest workout was at Ameriquest Field, and Sosa left town after having dinner with Daniels.
There was no indication from Daniels on whether the Rangers made any kind of offer to Sosa.
In 2005, Sosa hit .221 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs in 102 games during his only season with the Baltimore Orioles.
The 38-year-old former slugger started training last month at home in the Dominican Republic in hopes of returning to the majors. He said then that he had received calls from teams interested in signing him, but declined to reveal which ones.
"Sammy has relationships with several people in the organization dating back to the 80's, including Rudy (Jaramillo, the team's hitting coach) and some of our scouts in the Dominican, which have allowed us a little insight into what he's been up to," Daniels said.
During 17 seasons with the Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1989-91), Chicago Cubs (1992-2004) and Baltimore (2005), Sosa is a .274 career hitter with 588 home runs and 1,575 RBIs. He ranks fifth on the career home run list, and he hit more than 60 homers in a season three times.
Sosa was the NL MVP in 1998, when he batted .308 with 66 homers and 158 RBIs for the Cubs.
The Rangers signed Sosa at age 16 in July 1985. He made his big league debut in 1989 for Texas, hitting .238 with one homer and three RBIs in 25 games before he was traded to the White Sox, where he stayed until he was traded to the Cubs in the spring of 1992.

The temps hovered right above freezing in Dallas so we didn't get much as far as road conditions go. People were predicting the worst though. Just an hour North of here and people were getting 2" of straight ice. That stuff is brutal to drive on.
I think we're in the clear from here though. No more rain until this weekend and the temps are supposed to be just above freezing again.

Makes me glad I will be flying out to Maui Thursday.

How bad is it in BCS? Looked like the worst of our area was up north (RR/Gtown/Bell County) and heading towards BCS or maybe a little N of y'all.

Not a lot of snow, but still more then you expect in Texas.
What these pictures don't show is the amount of ice that has acummulated on the road and my cars. I had about a 1/2 inch thick sheet of ice covering my windshield.

I agree. I was calling us Texans a bunch of wimps this morning. Peoplt across the country have to deal with this on a daily basis and our news crew is acting like it is Armageddon.

I was just kidding, JT has a good point earlier in the thread about the lack of equipment and such. I could see mass panic for people that have no idea how to drive on ice.
It's just funny how people are 'iced in' from the pictures and description that purliquid posted.

It is all relative. During the summer the northern folks freak if it hits 100. That's nothing for us. We are used to the heat and can cope. Not wimps, just not used to it.
Oh, and a wet 31 degrees is colder than a dry 31 degrees.

I can understand that this is absolutely nothing compared to what others around the country face during the winter. It's just a very rare occurance here, so it seems to be a bigger deal then it should be. I mean, we were in the 80's about two weeks ago.

how about -20 over night and the Hill I went and boarded at on Saturday. The high was like 8 or something. The windshield wiper fluid made some little blue sno cones on my sprayers.

I'll take a wet 31 over a "I can't feel my nuts -30C" (-40 with wind).
True, it is relative. Like dirtysparks said though, it'd just funny to see things close down on what would be a rather nice day here.

Also realize there's no snow here to drive on. Just ice. Ice shuts down the North too, it just takes a ton more!
It's a coumpounding problem as well. No one driving means the ice on the roads isn't getting broken up and worn off / melted. Stays around a lot longer.
And yeah, I was in shorts and flip flops a couple of days ago.

We also spend a lot of time in the t'aint temperatures. 29-33F and raining is ten times more dangerous than 8F and snowing (for driving anyway). I'm on my second day of driving in freezing rain...black ice and whatnot. It sucks. I just wish the sun would come out...can you get scurvy from lack of vitamin D?

jt09, this is what they call light rain in Wyoming. The roads aren't really iced, but there's a layer of ice on all the vehicles left outside. School was canceled today. I don't think there's any reason to shut down schools, but I'm glad I'm not walking across campus in this crap.
