A great surfacing material I've found for sliders is called UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) Polyethylene. It's used for dump truck liners and also as a low-friction coating on the underside of airboats. The material is easy to cut with a table saw or skilsaw, and you just simply screw it to the frame of your slider and hit the edges with a router. I don't know about other areas, but in central Florida, where airboats are popular, you can go to an airboat shop and ask them about their scraps. Most shops will sell it to you by the foot, some will even give you their scraps. I got enough of the material to make a 50-foot A-frame 7 inches wide completely free. If you have money to spend, visit "tse-ok.com" They manufacture and sell the material, and will even ship it to your door from their website.
You only need it to be a quarter inch thick, because it never wears down. My advice would be to get a light color, because the dark colors tend to expand in the sun, making your rail or slider all wavy. |
