I am thinking about buying a dirtbike for myself soon, and i was wondering what size and such i would need.
I am about 5 foot 7 and weigh 120, and am only 15, so i will grow too. I would like something cheap (under 2000 if possible) and fun to ride. I would like to have something i could take on jumps when i reach that point, but mostly just trail riding.
I know i am asking a little cheap, but when your 15 it's hard to ask more.
Do i need an offroad or motocross bike? I don't plan on competing, but i could be a possibility sooner or later. |

A xr 250 is 4 stroke, a 125 is 2 stroke. If you have never rode before prepare to get your ass handed to you on a 2 stroke 125. I would say from your hight and weight a 125 is good, to much power for a beginner, but you will have to get used to the difference between a 2 and 4 stroke. they are alot different. I would suggest from personal experience a 2 stroke, once you ride one you will never want to get a 4 stroke. A 250 xr is about the same size bike as a 125, the seat hight might differ a couple inches but no big deal. and the only thing different between a 250 and 125 is 250's have alot more power and weight. The seat hight is almost the same, maybe 2 inches different. what ever you do dont get an 80 because its to small for you.
write back and let us know what you decide
good luck |

Sheesh people, a 250 pinger isn't an RPG, it's just a dirt bike. He's not going to kill himself on it unless he has wrist spasms. |

D420, I'll put my 4 stroke up against any comparable 2 smoker... any day!
While you are stuck playn in your little powerband I'll still be short shifting to 5th with plenty of power all the way to the top....
Wakeboarddrumma, Your fist bike should be more about what fits you best. From there get the biggest CC size you feel comfortable sitting on 2 stroke or 4 stroke. _________________ PEACE

what type of riding? Are there tracks around?
I would suggest getting on a site like thumpertalk.com and doing your research. Any performance bike is going to require maintenance. Make sure you know what you are getting into. _________________ The answer is D - All of the above. |

depends what your gonna do w/ it
Trail riding, play riding, no tracks or major jumping go w/
XR(honda) WR(yamaha) DRZ(suzuki) at least a 250
If you want to hit the track and freestyle and stuff like that your going to need .
CRF(honda) YZF(yamaha) RMZ(suzuki) KXF(kawasaki)
for your size a 250F will be perfect
STAY AWAY FROM 2 STROKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless you like mixing oil , fouling plugs, re-building top ends, and little power. |

like J said get something street legal. an enduro 250 or 4, that way you can ride trail and do a few smaller jumps and ride back and forth to school and your boyfriends house. _________________ CRAIGkelly.JEFFanderson.TRISTONpicott |

I won't do any serious jumping.
There is a track here, and i would like something low maintence if posisble. 4 strokes seem like they would be extremely tourquey without much speed. Is that correct? I don't care how fast i go long as it is a reasonable speed.

I would say a 125 2 stroke or a 250 4 stroke. The 250 4 stroke will be easier to ride, less feathering the clutch. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

ok one more thing,
Whats the difference in and off road, and a motocross bike? I think the offroad should work for me, espeacially with that price |

If you are not going to be hitting the track, get an offroad bike like an xr or kdx. If you want to be able to hang at your local track, you'd be better off getting a motocross bike like a cr, yz, kx, or rm. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

offroad bikes have much softer suspension, not suitable at all for riding on a track - but great for trail riding as it absorbs the small bumps and smooths out the ride. The engines are as quick to rev and generally make less HP than mx bikes with equal displacement.
MX bikes have stiffer suspension to handle jumps, whoops, etc. Engines are tuned for optimum HP.
all the bikes will require some level of constant maintenance. But for the ride you want, its worth it.
I had a CRF450, i chose to change the oil after everyride, plus wash down, etc. Really wasnt that big of a deal and didnt add that much more to the cost of ownership.
After riding both, i would absolutely take my mx bike offroad/trail riding, but i would never take an offroad bike to a track. _________________ The answer is D - All of the above. |

Seth, he said his budget was $2k. It will be hard to find a used yzf250 for that kind of money that isn't beat up. He could probably find a used wr250 for that kind of money _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

Moto does require maintenance.... The frequent oil changes and the constant wash down...
But IMO its way worth it!
4strokes typically are less maintenance.... _________________ PEACE

You should look into a CRF250 it's a great 4stroke and many people race on them. 2stroke 125's are taller than 250's. The 4stroke will be much more forgiving when you are learning. _________________ Liquid Force

I will only teach you on a two stroke though, IMO 4 strokes are a cop out for people who cant handle 2 strokes.
just my .02 though take it for what its worth.....and you can keep the change |

i am proof that 4 strokes are stuff, if you look into my garage you will see 3 bikes 04 SX 125, 03 KX 125 and a 05 CRF 250. the honda might have 3 hours on it, its the worst feeling to be on a track and not having a powerband. ill take up anybody on a track with a 4 stroke, you might get me out of the gate but dont get spooked when my powerband kicks in and i leave you on the tripple. i work at a moto shop (KTM, Yamaha, Honda, and Polaris) and the only people buying 4 strokes these days are ones planning on staying on trails. anybody putting their bike on a track is sticking with the 2strokes |

D420, Lets add a few good mud holes a couple high speed straights, make it a true HAIRSCRAMBLE by staggering the jumps and I'm down... No chain saw is lapping me unless McGrath is on it..
They gave your bike a sixth gear for a reason, it needed it to stay in that little power band.....LOL...
Get the best bike for your situation, I agree with D420, a 2 stroke is lighter and will be better suited for jumping. With that said most people ride TRAILS! _________________ PEACE

It's probably even worse to not know what you are talking about. 4 strokes have a powerband, its just across a broader range than a 2 stroke.
it is a fact that 4 stroke MX bikes make more power than their 2 stroke counter parts. How many 125's are still raced in the 125 class??? _________________ The answer is D - All of the above. |

matt 4, You sound lucky to still be employed. If 2 smokes are so great why does kawi no longer make a 125? I agree that they are fun to ride and if I had some money to blow I would love to have a 250 but to say that a thumper can't hang is just ridiculous. I don't care how hard your power band hits, it won't spook me as I pull away. _________________ I once saw a fork lift pick up a pallet of forks, it was way too literal for me. |

My first bike I'm selling a 1981 Yamaha Yz 125 2 stroke 500 dollars
2 stroke won't kick your ass if you anticipate the powerband IMO
twitch88, Kawi still makes a 125 my dad just bought one
A 250 four stroke is the same as a 125 two stroke, thats why the 125 divsion only has one rider on a 125, everyone else is on a 250 4 stroke _________________ SaNgEr bOaTs

I am ABSOLUTLY serious about this.
Kawisaki KDX 200
I've had one, I was doing up to a 70' tabletop on it and at least 50' doubles. I had some crazy after market stuff, but in stock form the bike rips and is SUPER easy to ride. It's the most user friendly bike there is. Period. It can be plush for woods riding, or have the suspension revalved and resprung for MX riding. I promice you'll be satisfied with it. You cn easily get one for under $2000 used. I just sold my KDX220 for $1000 and it was perfect mechanical. But no mods at all. Remember, guys on 125's and even small guys on 80's are doing huge doubles. You don't need a 250 to get that kind of speed. The 220 can be riddin like a 125, wound out using the clutch like crazy in the turns or chugged along. VERY versatile. Don't buy anything untill you look into it. The first mod has to be an FMF pipe. It opens up the motor like you wouldn't believe. Really. Do your googleing and find out more. |
