Posted: May 22, 2003 1:29 pm Post subject: Anyone put wheels on their prop guard? |
|
|
My trailer prop guard drags on the edge of my driveway for about 1 foot when I am pulling out.
Last night at Lowe's I picked up 2in caster wheels.
They look like the last item on this page (Faultless 2" Swivel Caster Wheel Single row ball-bearings)
http://www.pressdollies.com/caster%20wheels.htm
I was going to drill and bolt these onto the prop guard. One on each side.
Anything wrong with this idea? I am a little worried about losing the extra 2in of clearance and dragging a lot more.
Has anyone done this? Any opinions/advice appreciated.
Thanks

Found and old thread on this
http://forums.wakeboarder.com/viewtopic.php?t=2323&highlight=prop+guard
I wasn't going to weld anything. I was just going to put the casters on the bottom of the prop guard. It looks like in all the picts the wheels are only taking away a .5in of clearance. My way is going to take out 2 inches. Maybe not such a good idea?

I wouldn't want the swivel. If you start draging on a slope that runs across the direction of travel you could lose the rear of the trailer. I think straight ahead as shown in the previous thread would be best and safest.

Is your trailer level? In other words, could it benefit from a drop hitch? Just a thought.

Here is my setup. I think it is level?
But I didn't think of changing the hitch. Maybe I will look at that first.
Thanks

If you lower the hitch, that would raise the back, but you probably knew that already. I used to have to take my trailer out of the drive on like an angle running over the grass some. I think if you entire boat weight was resting on those wheels on the prop guard it might cause some damage to the trailer. The weight is meant to be balanced in the middle.

I just thought of this. What if you "jacked" up your trailer a little? Maybe some spacers in the springs. The only downside I can see is a higher center of gravity. Or maybe bigger tires if you could fit them under the trailer fenders.

Sweet setup BTW. It looks pretty level (kind of hard to tell in a picture), but I would probably try a lower hitch anyway. I don't have a drop hitch on my Expedition, but I'm sure it would help mine. I've dragged a few places, but not at home so I'm not too concerned.

I'm guessing those casters wouldn't last very long. Hanging off below the prop cage makes them very vulnerable.
I added casters to a DHM trailer...they were 2" or 3" wheels. I bought the casters at a specialty shop in SF and the salesman recommended against swivel casters for that application--he said they were not nearly as strong as fixed casters.
I had a blacksmith fabricate a bracket for each caster that he then welded to the trailer. Basically, each caster was mounted to the side of the prop cage, not underneath it. The primary support for each caster came from the main trailer C channel, not the prop cage. They were positioned so that the wheels extended approximately 1/2" below the cage. I had additional shims made up to fit between the caster and the bracket so that I could adjust how far the casters extended below the cage. Total cost was around $250 to $300.

I finally installed the Prop Guard rollers that I ordered from Dorsey. I don't have any pics but they basically look like the ones in the post that dba4life referenced. ended up ordering the brackets from Dorsey and getting the wheels directly from Grainger.
They hang about 3/4" below my prop guard. They work great. My driveway has a slight incline and I couldn't get in it without those wheels. They roll for about 16 inches.
I don't have any clearance problems that I know about. Those things are solid. If I do hit something in the rode, they aren't coming off. If you want some pics, I could take some for you.

Great info - Thanks
I think I may just take the bottom of my drieway at an angle. I am not going to try the swivel casters that I bought. That sounds like trouble.
Next boat will have wheels on the trailer back there!

Both utes are Holden Commodore ss .The blue one is a 2000 model with a 5 litre v8, and 5 speed with 185kw. The red one is a 2003 model with a 5.7 litre chev v8 engine, the same as a corvette, with a six speed box, with 255 kw. They are pics of our old boat and ute and new boat and ute.

It's all about the HSV. Big bling blinging with the SAN in tow. Whats the manual like on the boat ramp? My B4 is really tall in first and I give the clutch a caining if the boat ramp is steep.

What we do on my girls boat is, put on a 12 inch drop hitch. we get it in the driveway, switch the hitch, and it works fine. but be prepared, a 12 inch drop hitch will run you about 50 bucks.
