that looks like a mexi-roll.

on a hs front flip your board will flip tip over tail and your rotation will be over your right shoulder(clockwise kinda) or a cartwheel to your right.

Yep. That's a Mexican Backroll or a mexi-roll.

Even though the rotation is much like a frontroll it is really just a variation of a backroll where you duck your head at the top of the wake. There is no such trick as a heelside frontroll.

I have the final pic where i land don't worry i would put the video but i don't know how it just gives me a error thing. The difference between the one i do and the one that is on the video above is that the guy is more cartwheeling where as i am more straight over top. But i have never really heard of a mexi-roll.

doubleupboarder10, yeah, that's pretty much the most mexican looking backroll I've ever seen. The reason it's still called a backroll is that most people start out trying a backroll and then end up ducking their head and going over their toes a bit. When you try them in the future try to lean over the tail of the board and the rotation will be easier.

doubleupboarder10, it can't be a true front flip because the board would hit the rope. Therefore there's always an amount of cartwheel rotation. You probably can't see it now but if you do both you will realize how one is just a variation of the other.

And if you're still not satisfied know that wakeboarding trick names don't always make sense either. They were invented at different times by different people. For instance:

hs backroll = cartwheel rotation
hs frontflip = cartwheel rotation
hs frontroll doesn't exist
ts backroll = flip rotation
ts frontroll = flip rotation
ts frontflip doesn't exist

So congrats, you can land a mexi-roll. When you want to lean a backroll to blind it will help you. Try a tantrum next and if your toeside edge is good try a frontroll or a scarecrow. Don't want to be a heelside hero.

There is a TS front flip. You also have the fruitloop= TS frontflip to Backside 180. You don't use the direction your body goes to define the flip vs roll, you use the boards edges and tips. If the board rolls from edge to edge it is a roll: TS backroll, TS frontroll, HS backroll and even the tantrum is in the roll family. If the board flips from nose to tail it is a flip: HS frontflip, TS frontflip

But a backroll is also nose to tail.. There is no perfect convention.

And you're right, there is a ts front flip. http://www.wakeboarder.com/tricks/frontflip.phtml

doubleupboarder10, it's a real trick, just one of many different tricks.

You should try a tantrum, or maybe even a scarecrow or ts frontroll.

doubleupboarder10, its your first invert you should be proud. Just because the name isn't as glorious as you hoped doesn't mean much. In fact you can just call it a backroll if you want. Thats what I call mine whether or not its mexi. It is easier to land if you do more of a cartwheel rotation.

Nice LakeIolaLuke. I have to say the time in between when I landed my first 5 to when I landed my second one was waaaay too long. I still don't have it consistent.

a HS backroll kinda looks like it goes nose first to tail but it still rolls edge to edge off the wake

colefooter, the video example is different from the mexi roll doubleupboarder10 does because he lets go of one hand. Is it still the same trick? Confused doubleupboarder10, your "mexi roll" looks to me like a tantrum but forwards.

inter, letting go doesn't change the trick. It's still a mexican backroll.

For it to be a half-cab roll he would have had to take off switch. And he starts heelside and lands heelside. There is no 180.

Half-cab: A switch 180.

If you don't know what you're talking about defer to people who do Rolling Eyes

I thought I'd give some credit here. The reason that style back roll is called Mexican is because Andrea Gayton was the first pro rider to really get seen doing them that way (not sure if she was actually the first rider, kind of irrelevant). She's from Mexico, and since most people did progressive back rolls, the move was named in her sake.

If you're still wondering, the other type, a progressive roll, is where your board goes up behind you, nose-first, and you don't bend at the waist. That one is good for spinning frontside and more technically correct. The Mexican back roll is a good start for spinning backside with your roll. So don't feel bad about doing them Mexican, just work on taking it to the next step, grab it and spin it!

wake_quake, no i was getting at toeside backroll and tantrums looks similar in flipping styles they are both backflips, only toeside backroll is going forward like a gainer on a diving board.
