A simple way to replace the cable yourself rather than paying the dealer $300.00 plus. Disconnect the cable from either end, tie a piece of string to rudder end of cable, pull the old cable out (transom towards bow) while the string pulls back in place of the old cable. (this will be used to pull in new cable)

Now the trick part. Get yourself a long skinny funnel slide it over the rudder end of new cable. You will more than likely need to cut funnel back to get the opening large enough to slid over rod of cable as well as trim flang of funnel down as well so it matches the outside diameter of the adjustment nut. This funnel will keep the adjustment nut on cable from hanging up on any obstructions while passing through the hull. Once funnel is on and fitted tie string to rudder end of cable. One person pull string, another feed cable helm towards transom. Much easier than fighting those hang ups. Hope this helps!!!!

I've also heard that you can use the old cable to pull the new one through too. Disconnect from steering wheel, cut of the end of the old cable and duct tape it well to the transom end of the new cable. Pull the old cable out from the transom end then and the new one follows in place. I bet using the funnel in conjunction with this method would work too. Disclaimer: I haven't tried this method, but intend to do so soon.

That is a good tip if I do another one I will keep that in mind, my boat has a heater, bilge line and all the wiring coming through with the steering cable and it was a pain getting the cable past everything.
