We have about a 600' sandbar that I'd like to build a "temporary" slider on. It's in a river and they fluctuate the water level. It averages about 3' deep in the afternoon. Bar is exposed in the morning. So these are my questions:

1. How deep should the water be vs. height of slider? I don't want anyone to get hurt!
2. We are just starting on the rails--we do them in the rail park snowboarding but not in the water. For beginners who wide should the rail be? 1', 2' wide?
3. Our boat sits too low and sucks up the sand so we have a jet ski. A jet ski should be o.k. for towing on the rail, shouldn't it?
4. Materials? I'm not certain what they use in the snowboard park for the "box rails" but it's a white chopping block material. It looks better to me than pvc, anyone know what it might be?

Thanks!

1. You want the beginning of the slider 3-4 inches below the water level for the safest. When you start getting better you can practice ollying onto it and the next one you build you can start it out of the water. Especially for kids learning, it would be better to get them comfortable sliding before they have to ollie onto it.

2. This is personal preference. Although, generally the wider it is the easier/safer it is. You could probably do anywhere from 1'-3' and be fine.

3. Jet skies are fine. Just be careful with speed regulation when starting. You don't want to gun it or drop the gas when they're about to hop on the slider the first time.

4. For the sliding surface I've heard of people using PVC sheeting and trex (decking material). Although the stuff they use at KCW is that white chopping block material and it's supposed to be a great sliding surface. I forget what it actually is though. If you search I'm sure people have discussed sliding materials.

lcap,
The plastic material is HDPE.

And you can get it here...

I guess you're building more of a funbox than a rail. for a rail, 6-8 inches would be fine, I'd say 2-2.5' would make a good funbox

Also, The link above only sells sheets as big as 2'x4'. try www.tse-ok.com, they have sheets of UHMWPE (which is simply a denser polyethylene than HDPE) as big as 4' by 10', and you only need the 1/4" stuff. It's a little pricey, but it slides so smooth that you'll never want to grind a trex rail after riding on it. get it in a light color, the dark colors get to hot and expand, leaving it all wavy.

LakeIolaLuke,
lcap will have to pay an arm and a leg to ship from FL in 10' pieces. I showed him Tap because they're on the west coast and have shops in WA near him. My guess is that he can order it in longer pieces direct from the store if he picks it up.

But, you're right. Longer lengths would be much better.
