use a progressive edge for your approach. most people also throw before the wake when learning. go UP THE WAKE BEFORE THROWING. at the top of the wake, pull your elbows in and next to your hips and look over your lead shoulder TO THE SKY. this will help you spot your landing early. keep both hands on the handle or you might do a roll to revert. pull in the handle in the air to rotate faster, let it out a tad to slow the rotation. and Dont let go. I did my first couple of times. Just dont let go. I hope this helped.
*** and do NOT "throw" anything, including your hips. when you look up this will get the rotation going. and it's enough to get you around. good luck. |

| not that im scared, i try stuff all the time but my only worry is getting hurt doing things like this. i work for my parents and its critical that i do not get hurt. just yesterday my friend fell doing something as simple as a w2w jump and punctured his ear drum and now has no hearing in his ear. things like that go through my head as im flipping through the air. and forget a tramp.. thats even more dangerous in my opinion.. i like my neck the way it is |

Go on a tramp w/ a net if you're worried about falling off. I think if you want to build up confidence just practice like crazy on a tramp. I've only been riding 2 months and haven't been riding much lately (various boat problems and working alot), but I've been practicing both the tantrum and backroll rotation on the tramp. I'd always been afraid to do a backflip until 2 weeks ago, now I can pop 'em no prob. If you can't do an invert rotation on a tramp what makes you think you'll be able to do it on the water?
The backroll tramp rotation is definitely very awkward, especially the 2nd half of the rotation (I assume this is because of the lack of line tension and pull of the boat)...but getting the mechanics of the rotation on the tramp has me pumped to get back out and take this trick to the water...that is, if my boat ever decides to run properly and I can bail early from work a day or two during the week. |

| well the thing with the tramp is not only falling off but landing on my head/neck.. id rather take the abuse of the water than the tramp.. plus im not about to spend the money on one |

| If you're worried about hurting yopurself on a tramp then join a gymnastics club. They'll have the right equipment and can teach you how to fall safely and to progress at your speed without breaking your neck. Now if only I could apply what I've learned on the tramp to the water... |

| Ahhh the HS Backroll. Im trying this trick as well. Just came in from trying about 30 in a row in the rain and almost every time I popped the handle on the landing...SO CLOSE! Anyways, I think the falls on these are minimally painful. Last year when trying them I just wussed out and landed on my butt...no pain. This year I commited and I just land on my board every time and slide out or pop the handle. Sometimes your balls will burn a little from landing on them wrong but nothing long term. Only once have a had a decent fall. I just under rotated a little and the nose dug in and I submarined. Slapped my head on the water but Im fine although that is the kind of fall that will blow an eardrum. (In a bad scenario, dont let that scare you..nobody I know has done that, its not very common) If your worried about the falls/pain; Try this: Shorten your rope 10 feet and slow down 2-3mph (The idea is to have just enough hang time for the backroll and be going just fast enough to clear the wake comfortably) Once you get that, just take a strong progressive cut keeping your hips up/forwards/out and when you hit the wake, just explode and look up and behind your lead shoulder. Thats it, if you commit you should fly right around...it might help if you let go with your back hand if your doing off axis 360s. For me, I seem to throw them better when Im frustrated and or pumped. Just get some adrenaline going and just COMMIT and go balls to the wall. Good luck! |

i have a helmet that i got this winter and i have the balls to try anything.. i just need to know a bit of what im doing before i do it instead of just bombing the wake and flipping and spinning.. thanks for the all the info everyone.
i havent been out yet.. its been raining for 3 days straight now. i was so desperate today to board so we went out in the rain anyway.. its amazing how flat the water gets when its raining. it was actually pretty nice. |
