Yikes. 5 out of 9 places. At least Leo was...almost...kind of... honest. That district manager is a huge sack of stuff. _________________ Get Frugally Green!

I only get oil changes from them and the last time they somehow knocked out my windowwasher fluid motor. Luckily Cabana Boy was in town to redirect the connection.
I've always refused any extra work they recommend..... I guess I need to load this on my Ipod and show it to them the next time I get my oil changed _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

My buddy from high school used to work at one of these joints. He said that he would put a new filter on and bang his wrench on the oil pan a couple times, check the dip stick and send them on their way.

Why dont people change their own oil? You pay thousands of dollars for a car that you trust your life with. Why in the world wouldnt you want to get under it to give it a once over every month or so. I have found SO many maintenance issues while changing my oil it isnt funny. I found a HUGE gash on one of my front tires on my front wheel drive car. Changing your own oil cost half the price, you know its done right and you get to give your car a once over. Why would you pay some hack that doesnt give two craps about you our your car to change your oil? Its a NO brainer to me.... _________________ You know you own someone when you can agitate them enough to quote you in their signature. |

Tbonez, cause a lot of us don't have our own garage/driveway
If I did, yes I would change my own oil, but doing it in an apartment complex parking lot kinda makes me feel a bit on the white trash side! _________________

Because it's a pain in the ass. My truck takes 13 quarts of oil. I don't want to dispose of over a gallon of oil and I don't want to dick around with the filter. I also get the tires rotated every other oil change. Now that's something I'd do myself, but I don't have an impact wrench. |

Tbonez, Time is the biggest reason. While I agree I don't trust anyone's work but myself. I still don't always have the time. Plus in my days I am normally in a suit. And the weekends are reserved for playing on the water, not under my truck.
Dpierce37, white trash? Man if I were you I would definitely change my own oil. At least then they'll think you're straight. JK
Swass, WHAT!?!?!?!? What self respecting tool man doesn't have an impact??? Those things are great!!! I use mine all the time. I even have a cordless one, ooooh that one's nice to have. |

My brother in law trusted his truck to a oil change shop...He now changes his own oil after a 3k repair bill...In my opinion its something you just do....Its one of those pains in life that you just cant get around. That goes for women as well...My dad taught my sister how to change a tire and oil before he let her behind the wheel. _________________ You know you own someone when you can agitate them enough to quote you in their signature. |

So where should you take your car? To the dealership? Who is to be trusted?
I change the oil in my truck but other repairs I get done elsewhere. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Tbonez, I understand what you're saying, but oil changes are the only thing I get done. Like I said, it's about time for me.
And by the way, I sit there and watch the fawkers on my truck, watch ever step. If they go under the truck, I am squatting down watching. I haven't had any problems yet.
Dp yeah I knew you would say something like that. Had to make a joke since apparently I am white trash for working on my vehicles in my apartment complex. |

Don't any of you guys just use your local dealership?
I always have, my car is no longer in its warranty period and still goes there.. sures its maybe 15% more $$ but you know its done right generally as theirs so much more accountability.
For example, I queried (not compained.. just asked the question) an inspection on my front end after a minor impact and the next day I got a courtesy call from my regional BMW manager... I don't see jiffy Lubes guy getting busy pleasing people!
Unless its a tyre change any essential maintenance goes tot he local dealership.. just seems like they know the cars and have the parts around. _________________ www.AxisBoats.co.uk | www.Malibu-Boats.co.uk |

Mechanics should be treated like Financial Advisors. Don't go to one unless you get a referral from someone you can trust.
This is a very expensive investment you are having worked on, why would you treat it any differently?
If you trust your local JL, and they have not let you down yet, well I would continue on course. _________________

Guess I should make sure they changed the fuel filter on my last tune up.... I watched them use the T-Tech machine though... _________________ (insert funny chit here) |

Or, you can pay the same amount of money but get much better filters and oil. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Actually, w/ all the coupons I get in the mail for different places, it's almost cheaper to go get it done. It's sad I know, but the coupons I get are for like a $14.99 oil change (only 5 quarts) so after I buy another quart to put in I'm at about $20 w/ tax. Then I ask for the AAA, student, or whatever discount they'll give me, and I'm down to about $18. Last time I did it myself it was $16.75 for all the stuff, plus about an hour worth of work b/c I put the damn filter on too tight last time!
It's becoming a toss up, and if you don't already have an oil pan yourself there is another $10.00 (for a nice one w/ the storage tank for the used oil). |

Tell me about it, haugy! I think my compressor went tits-up on me, so I have to replace that before I get more cool tools. There's nothing cooler sounding than an air impact wrench. If nothing else, it sounds like I know what I'm doing behind that closed garage door.
I had my chance. My wife asked me what I wanted for Father's Day, and I said "you don't have to get me anything." Brilliant! |

We just bought a new Honda Element and it says change the oil every 10,000 miles unless you are doing heavy usage (such as towing).
For this I'll take it to the dealership and pay the extra that you normally get charged there....as was said earlier there seems to be more accountability there.
The main benefit I see of changing the oil myself is being able to use the high grade oil and high grade filters...its a big pain. |

um no man, like if they're going to charge $300 for changing a fuel filter then I ask to see the one they take out. |

One thing i was taught when taking a car in for repairs/oil change...... (anything that has to be removed and change) you always ask to save the parts for visual inspection.
But that only works if you've already prepared yourself in advance to recognize what was removed from your car. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

if you are getting a 20 dollar oil change, you are using crap oil. A lot of that stuff is recycled oil. another reason for not changing your own oil, is that on many many Cars its not to easy. _________________ Leges |
