The difference is in the boards rocker line. An abrupt pop is probly a 3 stage board which is more of a flat spot in the middle of the board with both ends arcing upward. Smooth is probly reffering to a continuous rocker which is more of a continuous arc throughout the length of the board. 3 stage tends to pop higher but more wake to wake whereas the contiuous shape will not pop up as high but can take tricks farther out into the flats. They are both good for inverts and spins because these trick come from good technique (its really just a preference). My advise is to go to your proshop and demo both shapes and see what works best for you.
for a beginnner it'd probably be better to go with a smooth ride continuous rocker...it's easier to learn on at first...then when u have some decent tricks in ur bag n want to upgrade boards go to a 3 stage for the extra boost.. _________________ Smile at the hotties on the boat...Huck ur new trick...Nail it and they'll think ur Wicked..and even if u bail they can soothe u afterwards:D...
