ok to post this question going into my second season on a wakeboard, the answer might be obvious. but it might help some first timers as well.... is it a good idea to try to master surface tricks before attempting catching some air? Question

In general, yeah. Try being able to switch from regular to switch, ollie, carve, edge, and you will definitely have an easier time with getting more air.

I don't get up either switch or regular. I get up with the board perpendicular to the boat. Once I am up, I either go switch or regular depending on what I want to do.

It's not hard to get up switch, as Alt-Adjust said you start off side sliding, when you are in the water your board is perpendicular to the boat, as the boat pull you forward the board will lift you up out of the water sidesliding. Most people turn to their natural riding postition as soon as their board breaks to the surface. Instead what you need to do is keep slidesliding, keeping your head and hips behind the board at all times (don't want a faceplant do you?) and then twist into the switch stance, it feels very alien at first, but with practice your muscle memory will build and you'll feel more and more comfortable.

Your friends are right though learn switch as early as possible it'll help loads down the road.
Good Luck
