Basically Starting Over, From the Ground Up

I'm thinking of just starting my riding over from the bottom. A guy I ride with said you are better off learning your butterslides and what not at the start. So I think the start of this year is going to be no fins in the board and back to basics. I am going to work on Butterslides, ollies, switch riding, toeside edge(heelside is locked down) and other basic stuff. After that I will start doing w2w mainly, but still doing it during the other process. Do you all think think starting over would help my control on the water alot? The guy I ride with looked like he had the same balance as if he would be riding on water, nothing slipped out.

depends on ur style and what other things u do...with my first board it only had 2 removable fins that kept that board pretty locked up so i didn't focus 2 much on the slides and whatnot...once i got my heelside edging and w2w's down i work on the toesides..then when i got that and some 1's i started to do a bit of wakeskating and it helped me alot with my boardslides and surface tricks...if u have access to a wakeskate screw around on it for a bit then take it to ur board for surface tricks.

Yea I think that not riding with fins is really beneficial, it really teaches you how to initiate your edges well and as far as the surface tricks go, you will have a much easier time not catching an edge. What kind of board do you ride?
