Its all preference. I personally don't ride with fins on my substance, unless its real choppy. It kind of depends on your board most models out now a days have model in fins, but some beginner boards don't have much anything on the bottom and rely soley on the fin. Let us know what board you are getting. If it has some molded in fins then read the bottom.

One thing I recommend, when getting a new board, is to take 3-4 good sets without the fins. This will teach you the correct way to edge on your board. Once you get comfortable without the fins put them back on and decide what you like better.

cool thanks guys, i havent decided what board yet, i dont want to spend more then 400 bucks for board and bindings im 5'6" so what size board should i buy, if weight matters im 185lbs

when i start to do spins and such and ride fakie, i should take the fin off? will it mess me up if the fin is in the front of the board?

Weight matters more than height. Im the same weight and I ride a 141, somewhere in that area would be about right for you.

I don't know what you have rode before, but wasn't there a fin in the front tip of the board when you were riding regular. Anyway, regardless of whether you are riding switch or regular, the front tip of the board will be out of the water so the fin on that tip will be in the water.

Like i said before, it is all preference. You are just gonna have to try both.

If you're going to be doing lots of butter slides, just take 'em out (that is, if you have molded fins), if not, leave them in.

It's also a personal preference too, but if you're riding finless on a choppy day, good luck getting an edge Razz

For the spins and other stuff, leave them in while you're learning. If you under rotate it will catch and spin you back sort of.
